Vaillant F.85 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
Vaillant say the flow and return sensors have been installed on the same pipe, or on the wrong pipe. The boiler will not run until they are where it expects them.
Take care
Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.85
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.
What F.85 means
F.85 is the bluntest row in the sensor family. Vaillant print it on the ecoTEC plus as "NTCs fitted incorrectly" and spell out the finding on the ecoFIT, ecoTEC sustain and exclusive tables: "the flow and/or return temperature sensors have been installed on the same pipe/incorrect pipe", with the ecoFIT adding "temperature sensor not connected or is connected incorrectly".
The board reaches that conclusion by watching the two readings move together when they should move apart — two sensors on one pipe see one temperature. The instruction to the engineer is the same as for F.71 and F.84, to check each sensor's "correct thermal connection", and there is no part on the list because nothing has failed.
That makes F.85 almost entirely a code of recent work: a heat exchanger change, a pump replacement or any repair that involved unclipping the sensors and clipping them back. It is the third of three related codes — F.72 for an unbelievable spread, F.84 for an inverted one, F.85 for no spread at all — and the 2022 CS/1-5 keeps it as F.085 with the single cause "installed on the same pipe/wrong pipe".
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Both sensors clipped to one pipe after a repair | Vaillant's only stated cause. The flow and return pipes run close together above the heat exchanger and the two NTC leads reach both; put back in a hurry, both end up on the flow. | Common |
| A sensor on the wrong pipe | One sensor clipped to a bypass or hot water pipe instead of the primary flow or return. It reads a real temperature, just not the one the board needs. | Occasional |
| A sensor not connected | The ecoFIT wording adds a sensor left unplugged or plugged into the wrong position on the board, which produces the same non-diverging pair of readings. | Occasional |

Related Vaillant fault codes
- F.0Get it checkedThe flow temperature sensor circuit is broken. The boiler cannot read how hot the water leaving it is, so it has stopped rather than fire blind.Related: temperature sensors
- F.72Get it checkedThe flow and return sensors are reporting a temperature difference that cannot be real. The boiler is blaming the sensors themselves rather than the water.Related: temperature sensors
- F.1Get it checkedThe return temperature sensor circuit is open: the boiler is getting no reading from the sensor on the pipe bringing water back in, so it has stopped.Related: temperature sensors
- F.10Get it checkedThe flow temperature sensor has short-circuited. The boiler is reading an impossible value from the sensor on its outlet pipe and will not fire on it.Related: temperature sensors
- F.11Get it checkedThe return temperature sensor has short-circuited. Vaillant treat it as a wiring or sensor fault, and the boiler stays off until the circuit reads correctly again.Related: temperature sensors
- F.84Get it checkedThe flow and return sensors disagree in a way that cannot be true — the return reading warmer than the flow. Vaillant's first explanation is that the two sensors have been swapped.Related: temperature sensors
