Potterton boilers fault codes
Potterton sits inside the Baxi Heating group, and the practical consequence is that Potterton appliances use the same three-digit E numbering as Baxi and share a great deal of componentry. If you find a Baxi answer to a Potterton code, it will usually be broadly right. What differs is the installed base. Potterton built its reputation on the Promax, which went into an enormous number of council, housing association and landlord properties from the mid-2000s onwards, so a great many of these appliances are now fifteen years old, sitting on systems that have never been chemically cleaned and are looked after by somebody who does not own them. That context changes which faults you actually see and what tends to be behind them.
Where the code shows on a Potterton
On the Promax the code appears on a small LCD behind the drop-down flap on the front panel, so you may need to open the flap to see anything at all — a Promax showing no display is often simply a Promax nobody has opened. The Assure range moved to a larger front-mounted display that shows the code without opening anything. Older Promax appliances indicate some faults by a flashing pattern on the neon indicators instead of a numeric code.
How to reset a Potterton
On the Promax, hold the reset button behind the front flap for around five seconds until the display clears. On the Assure, press and hold the button marked with a flame symbol. If the appliance has locked out repeatedly it may need isolating at the fused spur for a minute instead. In a rented property, remember that anything beyond pressing reset is the landlord's responsibility to arrange.

- E133Get it checkedIgnition failed and the appliance has locked out. On a Promax the condensate run is the first thing to check in cold weather.
- E119Get it checkedThe appliance has stopped because system pressure is too low. Refilling to 1.2 bar clears it, but on an old system the reason it fell matters more.
- E160Get it checkedThe fan is not running at the speed the appliance expects, so the burner is locked out. This needs an engineer.
- E128Get it checkedThe flame was established and then repeatedly lost. That is a different fault from failing to light and it points somewhere else.
