What E130 means
E130 is the flue thermostat fault, with E131 as the associated lockout on some models. A condensing appliance is supposed to send comparatively cool gas up the flue — extracting that heat into the water is precisely what makes it condensing — so a high flue temperature means heat is going somewhere it should not. On the Potterton installed base the usual reason is straightforward and depressing: these are old appliances on old systems, and the heat exchanger waterways are furred with limescale, magnetite, or both. A deposit layer only a fraction of a millimetre thick insulates the metal from the water well enough to push flue temperatures up measurably. The condition develops over years, so efficiency has usually been quietly degrading for a long time before the thermostat finally trips. It also matters for the flue: plastic flue systems are rated for the temperatures a condensing appliance normally produces, which is exactly why this trips the appliance out rather than simply logging a note.

Common questions about Potterton E130
Can I keep using it until an engineer comes?
Better not to. If the flue temperature is genuinely high you are running a plastic flue outside its design range. If the property is cold, use a plug-in electric heater in one room rather than continuing to run the boiler.
Would a powerflush have prevented this?
If the deposit is magnetite from the system, then largely yes, and a magnetic filter would have helped keep it away. Limescale bonded inside the heat exchanger is a different matter and needs a descale — a flush will not shift it.
At what point is a new boiler the better answer?
If a heat exchanger replacement is quoted on an appliance already past fifteen years, get a comparison quote for a new installation. The exchanger is usually the single most expensive part, and the rest of the appliance is exactly as old as the bit that just failed.
