Potterton E118 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerDigital display with a Reset button and spanner or R symbol, code shown as a flashing 118: Potterton Assure Combi 25/30/36 and Assure System 12–32 (2019–2023), Promax Ultra Combi 24–40 (2015–2019). On the rotary-switch Pottertons the same condition is E119.Last updated

The digital-display Pottertons — Assure Combi, Assure System, Promax Ultra — have dropped below half a bar on the heating circuit. Repressurise to 1–1.5 bar and the boiler restarts on its own.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Potterton properly.

What does the boiler do after you top it up?

The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.

Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.

Runs normally

Expected. Watch how long the fill lasts.

Needing it again within a few weeks points to a leak, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge — report it or book it.

Still shows 118 with pressure above 1 bar

The switch is not reporting what the gauge sees.

Installer job: switch connections and the switch itself.

A different number appears

The pressure fault is cleared and the boiler has moved on to whatever stopped it next.

Look up the new code; 133 after a refill is often just the first ignition attempt failing on air.

What E118 means

On the Assure and the Promax Ultra the low-pressure code is 118. Both installer manuals name the primary circuit's pressure as the thing that is too low, and both fix the trigger at the same point — the code comes up once the primary circuit has fallen below half a bar. It replaces E119 for owners moving from a Promax, and the number is the only thing that changed; the threshold and the remedy are the same.

What is different is how the Assure treats you afterwards. Its user guide says: "When the correct pressure is restored the boiler will reset automatically", and it wants the top-up earlier than the old boilers did — "If the water pressure is lower than 0.7 bar, the system must be topped up", with the boiler stopping at 0.5. The Assure also shows the pressure on the screen as well as on the gauge when there is power, which makes the fill easier to judge.

The user guide's repressurising section describes the same two-tap arrangement as the Promax — "a temporary filling loop consists of two isolating taps and a separate filling pipe" — and repeats the warning that "if the water pressure requires regular re-pressurising a fault or leak is indicated". The Promax Ultra adds a code the Assure does not have at the other end of the scale: 117 for pressure above 2.7 bar, which is where an over-enthusiastic top-up ends.

What causes it

Causes of the Potterton E118 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Leak on the heating circuitRadiator valves, towel-rail unions, the relief valve discharge pipe outside. The Assure user guide's maintenance list asks the owner to "check radiators for leaks and (especially in damp areas) for rust" for exactly this reason.Common
Expansion vessel flatPart 7683801 in the Assure System parts list. Without its air charge the system reaches 3 bar hot, the safety valve lifts, and the pressure is gone by the next cold start.Common
Pressure switch, or the lead to itPart 5114748 in the Assure System list. If the gauge shows more than 0.5 bar and 118 persists, the installer manual's section D checks the switch connections before replacing it.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Let the boiler cool and check the pressure on the gauge or on the display. The Assure guide wants a top-up below 0.7 bar and normal running between 1 and 2 bar.

  2. Locate the loop: either two isolating taps that take a separate filling pipe, or a permanent loop on the pipework near the boiler. If you have the temporary type, connect the pipe between the taps and tighten the nuts.

  3. Fully open one tap, then open the second carefully while watching the gauge or the screen. Stop at 1–1.5 bar and close both taps.

Above 3 bar the safety valve operates and the guide says to contact your installer. On a Promax Ultra you will see 117 before that, at 2.7 bar.
  4. Disconnect the filling pipe (a little water will come out), refit blanking caps if you have them, and keep the pipe. The boiler restarts on its own once the pressure switch is satisfied; no button press is needed.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Potterton E118

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.
