Hotpoint F15 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
A real dryer fault you can usually clear yourself in ten minutes. Hotpoint’s own website will tell you it is a washing machine heating fault and offer you a paid engineer.
Take care
What F15 means
This is the clearest example on this site of why checking a manufacturer’s website is not always enough. The dryer manual for the machines that show this code gives a single combined instruction for it: "If the display shows F10 or F15: Turn off and remove the plug. Clean the filter and the condenser (see Maintenance). Then replace the plug, turn on and start another programme. If F10 or F15 is still displayed contact the Service Centre."
So on a Hotpoint dryer, F15 means clean the filter and the condenser. It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and it is one of only two codes in the entire family that the manufacturer gives an owner fix for. Now try Hotpoint’s own tumble dryer error code page. F15 is not among the thirteen codes in its clickable list at all. Enter the light pattern into the page’s decoder instead and you are told "F15 - Heater control fault (Washing Machine and Washer Dryers)", with the issue described as "Washing Machine is not heating water or pauses during a wash cycle / not drying or pauses during drying cycle", and given a number to book an engineer.
The decoder does not even hide the origin — the title still says washing machine, on Hotpoint’s page and on Whirlpool’s. These pages are the group’s washing machine tables with the noun substituted, and this code is where that does real damage. An owner with a blocked filter, which they could clear themselves before the kettle boils, is told they have a heating fault and given a number to book an engineer.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The door filter is blocked | The first thing the manual’s remedy names. Hotpoint describe the related lamp as "Failure of the air flow necessary for machine operation", which is a fair description of what a blocked filter does. | Common |
| The condenser needs cleaning | The second half of the manual’s remedy, and the part most owners have never done. The booklet for these machines says, in capitals, that you must clean the fluff from the condenser every month; the current-generation table says monthly or every five drying runs. Either is far more often than most people manage. | Common |
| The condenser was refitted wrongly last time | The booklet asks you to check two things after refitting: that the positioning arrows on the front of the unit point upwards and that all three catches are back in their lock position. A unit that is in upside down or not latched leaves the air path unsealed, and the machine behaves as though it were blocked. | Occasional |
| A genuine fault behind the airflow symptom | The manual’s own escalation: if the code is still there after cleaning, ring the service centre. At that point something other than lint is restricting the machine. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Open the door and take the laundry out before anything else, spreading it rather than leaving it heaped.
Turn the machine off and remove the plug. The manual is specific about unplugging rather than just switching off at the machine.
Clean the door filter thoroughly. On these machines it sits in front of the drum opening: pull the plastic grip upwards to lift it out, clean the fluff from the mesh — rinse it under running water or use a vacuum cleaner — and refit it so it sits flush in the trim. The booklet says never to run the dryer without it.
Clean the condenser, following the booklet: pull open the condenser cover at the bottom of the machine, release the three catches by turning them 90 degrees anticlockwise, and pull the unit out by its grip. Some water in the tubes is normal. Flush the fluff from between the plates with cold water from the rear of the unit, and wipe the seals.
Hotpoint’s booklet: "Failure to clean the condenser could cause premature failure of your dryer." The plates are thin metal — cold water only, no hard vacuum nozzles and nothing sharp between them.Refit the condenser with the positioning arrows on its front pointing upwards, push it fully home and turn all three catches back to their lock position, then close the cover. The booklet asks you to check both the arrows and the catches before you carry on.
Replace the plug, turn on and start another programme. If F15 is still displayed after that, the manual’s own instruction is to contact the service centre.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hotpoint F15
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Nothing at all if it is the filter or condenser, which the manufacturer’s own remedy assumes it usually is. A call-out only becomes appropriate after cleaning has failed — and a reader who follows the website instead of the manual risks paying one unnecessarily.

Common questions about Hotpoint F15
Hotpoint’s website says this is a heating fault. Which is right?
The manual, because it is about your appliance. Hotpoint’s tumble dryer error code page is their washing machine table with the noun changed — we checked, and all thirteen fault titles in its list are identical to the washing machine versions. F15 is not even in that list; it only comes up through the page’s light decoder, whose title for it still says "Washing Machine and Washer Dryers", on Hotpoint’s page and Whirlpool’s alike. The dryer manual’s remedy is to clean the filter and condenser.
How do I know I am not being fobbed off?
Go and look at the two pages yourself. The dryer error code page and the washing machine error code page on hotpoint.co.uk carry the same fault titles. Then click the indicator lights on the dryer page: the decoder tells you your washing machine is not operating and that water remains in it. It was never converted at all.
What does F15 actually mean, then?
Honestly, the manufacturer never says. That is the strange part of this family — the manual tells you what to do about F10 and F15 and refuses to give any code in the family an individual meaning. What we can tell you is the published remedy, which is cleaning, and that it is free.
Should I book an engineer?
Not before you have cleaned the filter and the condenser. If the code survives a proper clean then yes, and that is the manual’s own escalation. But booking first risks paying a call-out charge for something you could have done yourself.
