Hoover E7 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

A door problem. If the door is locked shut, Hoover want you to unplug and wait two to three minutes before trying it again, and the wait is the point.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Hoover properly.

What E7 means

E7, or seven flashes of every LED, is published by Hoover as a door problem. Their remedy has three parts: check the door is correctly closed, check clothes inside the drum are not preventing it from closing fully, and — if the door is locked — switch off and unplug the machine, wait two to three minutes and reopen the door. That wait is not a superstition. Elsewhere in the same manual Hoover describe "a special safety device" that stops the door opening straight after a cycle and tell you to wait two minutes for the DOOR LOCKED light to go out, and the E7 wait is the same device given a little longer.

Hoover do not say how it works; our reading is that it is a thermally-held interlock that has to cool before it releases, which is why a door tried after ten seconds is still locked and a door tried after three minutes usually is not.

People conclude the lock has failed somewhere in between. There is a contradiction here worth naming rather than smoothing over. Third-party code lists frequently give Candy or Hoover E07 as a motor fault. We have found no Hoover or Candy document that says so; it is usually presented as a service-level numbering, and the only table Hoover publish to owners gives seven flashes as the door. If you are working from your own manual, the door is the right answer. If an engineer quotes you a motor on the strength of the number alone, ask which document they are reading it from.

What causes it

Causes of the Hoover E7 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Door not fully latchedHoover’s own first check. The door needs a firm push at the centre rather than a nudge; resting on the seal looks closed and does not register.Common
Washing trapped in the door sealA sleeve, a sock corner or a duvet edge across the lip holds the door a fraction open. Second on Hoover’s list and easy to miss.Common
Interlock still warm and holdingNot a fault at all. Hoover’s "special safety device" holds the door for around two minutes after any cycle and, on our reading, has to cool before it releases, which is why they specify two to three minutes unplugged.Common
Door catch or striker wornYears of use let the door sit a millimetre proud of where the switch expects it. Usually a cheap plastic catch rather than the interlock itself.Occasional
Door interlock failedThe switch no longer confirms the door is shut, or no longer releases it. The paid outcome, and still one of the more modest repairs on a washing machine.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Open the door if you can and run a hand right round the seal. Look for a sleeve, a sock or a duvet corner lying across the lip, which is Hoover’s second check and the commonest cause after the door simply not being pushed shut.

  2. Close it firmly at the centre of the door rather than at the edge, until you hear the catch engage. A door held shut by the seal rather than the catch gives this code every time.

  3. If the door is locked shut, do exactly what Hoover say: switch off, unplug, and wait two to three minutes before trying it. Time it rather than guessing, because the interlock needs those minutes to cool and release.

  4. Look at the catch and the striker while the door is open. A worn or cracked plastic catch, or one that has come loose, holds the door out of position and is an inexpensive part.

  5. If the door is still locked after several minutes unplugged and there is water in the drum, drain it through the filter hatch first. A drum full of water pressing on a door makes everything harder.

  6. If it will not release at all, book an engineer for the interlock. Do not lever the door with a screwdriver — the interlock is what stops the drum turning with an open door, and forcing it usually turns a part into a part plus a hinge.

Never force or defeat a door interlock. It is the only thing preventing a drum from spinning while the door is open.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hoover E7

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£150

Time on site

20 minutes

Nothing if it is trapped washing, a door not pushed home, or an interlock that just needed its two to three minutes. A door interlock fitted is £90 to £150, higher on an integrated machine.

Common questions about Hoover E7

Why do I have to wait two to three minutes?

Because the interlock is what Hoover call a special safety device that keeps the door shut for about two minutes after every cycle, and on a fault they give it two to three minutes unplugged to release. Our reading is that it is thermally held and has to cool. Ten seconds is not enough, and trying it repeatedly during the wait is how people convince themselves the lock is broken when it is about to release.

Some sites say E07 is a motor fault. Which is right?

Work from your own manual: the table Hoover publish to owners gives seven flashes as a door problem, and it is the only Hoover-published table we have found. The motor reading circulates on third-party lists, usually described as service-level numbering, and we have not found a Hoover or Candy document behind it. If someone quotes a motor on the number alone, ask which document they mean.

The door is locked and my washing is soaking wet inside.

Drain the machine through the filter hatch at the bottom front first, into a shallow tray. That removes the weight of water pressing on the door and makes the interlock’s job easier. Then give it the full two to three minutes unplugged before trying the door again.

What does a door interlock cost?

Typically £90 to £150 fitted, and towards the top of that on an integrated HBWM machine that has to come out of its housing before anyone can reach the front panel. A worn catch, if that is all it is, costs considerably less.
