Vaillant F.65 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerEvery ecoTEC generation from 2005, ecoFIT pure and sustain, ecoTEC sustain, open-vent and 48–64 kW ecoTEC plus; ecoTEC plus CS/1-5 as F.065; ecoMAX; turboMAX plus with the earth-connection check.Last updated

The electronics have got too hot. Vaillant say either something outside the boiler is heating the board, or the board itself is faulty; the boiler stops until it cools.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.65

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.65 means

The control board monitors its own temperature, and F.65 is it exceeding the range Vaillant allow. The wording barely changes in twenty years: "electronics temperature too high — electronics too hot due to external effect, electronics defective" on the 2005 and 2009 ecoTEC, "electronics overheating due to external influences, electronics defective" on the exclusive, ecoFIT and sustain, and "the permissible operating temperature range for an electronic component has been exceeded" on the 2022 CS/1-5, whose check is to look for external heat effects on the electronics and replace the PCB if there are none.

The ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5 table is the one that tells the engineer what to do about the external cause: "if required, reduce the environmental temperature". That is the useful half of the code. A boiler in a small, unventilated cupboard, boxed in behind a door, sitting above a tumble dryer or next to a hot water cylinder that has lost its insulation, can push its board past the limit on a warm day, and F.65 on a hot afternoon that clears in the evening is telling you about the cupboard rather than the boiler. The turboMAX plus is the outlier, reading "PCB processor temperature too high — check earth connection or electronics defect". The ecoMAX has the same row as "electronic system affected by external heat source".

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.65 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Boiler enclosure running hotVaillant's "external influences". A boxed-in boiler, a cupboard with the ventilation blocked or another heat source alongside raises the air around the electronics box beyond its rating.Common
Heat from inside the boilerA leaking case seal or a failed fan gasket letting warm combustion-side air into the electronics box. An engineer checks the seals when the room itself is cool.Occasional
Board defectiveThe electronics have a fault that makes them run hot or misreport their temperature. Vaillant list it second on every table; the outcome is a new PCB.Occasional
Earth connection fault on a turboMAX plusThe legacy table's first check. A poor earth can produce a false processor temperature fault on that range.Rare

Common questions about Vaillant F.65

It only happens on hot days. Is the boiler faulty?

Possibly not. Vaillant's own instruction for that pattern is to reduce the temperature around the boiler: unblock cupboard vents, leave the door open on hot afternoons, move anything warm away from it. If it still trips in a cool room, the board is suspect.

Can I reset F.65?

Yes, once the boiler has cooled, using the fault clearance key. If the surroundings were the cause the boiler runs normally afterwards. Repeated F.65 in a cool location needs an engineer.

Is my boiler cupboard too small?

Vaillant's installation instructions set the clearances and ventilation a compartment needs. An engineer can check yours against them; boxing a boiler in after installation is a frequent cause.
