Vaillant S.34 status codewhat it means
Not a fault. S.34 is frost protection: the boiler has fired by itself because its flow temperature dropped below 5 °C, and it will warm the water to about 30 °C and stop.
Before you start
What S.34 means
S.34 is the status "Heating mode: frost protection — the frost protection function for heating mode is activated". Vaillant's operating instructions describe the function itself: "if the heating flow temperature falls below 5 °C when the on/off button is on, the product comes into operation and heats the circulating water to approx. 30 °C on both the heating side and the hot water side (if available)". So a boiler showing S.34 in the small hours of a January night, with the heating programme off, is doing what it was built to do: it has sensed near-freezing water inside itself and is running a short burn to protect its own heat exchanger and pipework.
Two cautions in the same section matter more than the code. First, "the frost protection function cannot guarantee flow through the entire heating installation, which means that parts of the heating installation may freeze"; it protects the boiler, not a radiator in an unheated extension. Second, "to keep the frost protection devices active, you should switch your product on and off using the controller, if one is provided", because a boiler switched off at its own on/off button, or isolated at the fused spur, has no frost protection at all.
The row is worded "frost protection active" on the ecoFIT pure and ecoTEC sustain, "antifrost mode active" on the 2005 to 2012 ecoTEC and "frost protection mode" on the ecoMAX and turboMAX plus, and appears as S.034 on the 2022 ecoTEC plus. It is a normal, self-clearing status.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Cold weather with the heating off or set very low | Water standing in the boiler cools toward freezing when the house is unheated overnight or while you are away. The burn is deliberate and brief. | Common |
| Boiler in a cold location | A garage, loft or outbuilding installation sees S.34 far more often than a kitchen one, because the ambient temperature around the boiler is what chills the water. | Common |
| Faulty flow sensor reading low | Rare, but a flow NTC drifting low in mild weather would trigger frost protection burns that make no sense. Context, not a Vaillant row; a sensor fault usually shows as F.10 or F.20 instead. | Rare |
What to try yourself
Do nothing to the boiler. S.34 clears when the water reaches about 30 °C. There is no reset and nothing to top up.
During a cold spell, leave the boiler switched on at its own on/off button and use the room control or programmer to manage heating, as the operating instructions ask. Set a low background temperature rather than "off" if the house will be empty, so that radiators and pipes in cold rooms are protected too.
If S.34 appears in mild weather, or the boiler fires for frost protection repeatedly while the house is warm, note the times and mention it at the next service; a temperature sensor may be reading low.

Nothing. Frost protection is normal operation. A sensor that triggers it falsely is £90 to £160 to replace during a visit.

- S.08Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.08 is the burner anti-cycling time: the boiler has just finished a heating burn and is deliberately waiting, up to about twenty minutes, before it is allowed to relight.Related: status codes
- S.31Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.31 is summer mode: heating has been switched off at the boiler while hot water carries on. If you want the radiators back, turn the heating flow temperature up from "Heating off".Related: status codes
- S.30Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.30 means the room thermostat or programmer is not asking for heat, so the boiler is idle on purpose. If the house is cold, look at the thermostat, not the boiler.Related: status codes
- S.40Get it checkedNot a lockout, but not normal either: comfort protection mode. The boiler has detected a fault and is running on with reduced comfort. Its fault memory will say what it found.Related: status codes
- S.88Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.88 means the purging programme is running: the pump is cycling to push air out of the boiler, 7.5 minutes per circuit, and the burner stays off until it finishes.Related: status codes
- S.96Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.96, S.97 and S.98 are the boiler testing its own sensors — return, water pressure, flow and return — with heating demands blocked for the few seconds it takes.Related: status codes

Common questions about Vaillant S.34
The heating is off. Why did the boiler fire?
Because frost protection overrides the heating programme. Vaillant's instructions say the boiler comes into operation below 5 °C flow temperature whenever the on/off button is on. It is protecting itself, and it uses very little gas doing so.
Will it protect my whole system?
No. The operating instructions are explicit that flow through the entire installation cannot be guaranteed, so a radiator in an unheated room or a pipe in a loft can still freeze. Keep some heating on in a hard frost.
Does it work if I switch the boiler off at the button?
It does not. The function needs the boiler on and powered. That is why Vaillant ask you to switch the heating off at the controller rather than at the boiler, and why a boiler isolated at the wall for a winter holiday is at risk.
