Vaillant S.96 status codewhat it means
Not a fault. S.96, S.97 and S.98 are the boiler testing its own sensors — return, water pressure, flow and return — with heating demands blocked for the few seconds it takes.
Before you start
What S.96 means
S.96 is the status "Self-test: return temperature sensor — the self-test for the return temperature sensor is activated". It has a family: S.97 is the water pressure sensor self-test, S.98 the flow and return temperature sensor self-test, S.92 the "water circulation volume self-test" and S.99 the catch-all "Vaillant self-test", which the ecoFIT pure calls "internal automatic test programmes". All five are folded onto this page because they are one behaviour: at intervals, and before it commits to a burn, the boiler checks that what its sensors report is plausible, and while it does so the ecoTEC exclusive's wording applies — "return sensor test running, heating demands are blocked".
The 2005 to 2012 ecoTEC says the same of S.96, S.97 and S.98: "check is running, demand (DHW or heating) is blocked". The ecoTEC sustain widens S.96 to "flow and return temperature sensors, heating and domestic hot water demand blocked or product fault", the last three words being the only hint in any table that a self-test can end badly. It can: a sensor that fails its test produces the matching fault code, F.10 or F.11 for a short circuit, F.0 or F.1 for an open one, F.73 or F.74 for the pressure sensor, and those pages carry the remedies.
But the tests themselves take seconds, run unasked, and are the reason a boiler occasionally seems to pause for no reason with S.9x in the status display before carrying on. The 2022 ecoTEC plus prints them as S.092, S.096, S.097 and S.098 with the same "heat demands are blocked" note. There is nothing to do and nothing to reset.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Routine self-test | The boiler checks its sensors at intervals and before burns. The status shows for seconds and clears itself. | Common |
| Test repeated after a sensor reading looked odd | A reading that fails plausibility is re-tested before a fault is raised. A boiler that sits in S.96 or S.98 for longer than usual, or shows it often, is re-checking a sensor on its way to F.10, F.11 or F.0. | Occasional |
| Pressure sensor test after a top-up or F.22 | S.97 follows a change in system pressure or a reset from a pressure fault while the boiler confirms the sensor agrees with reality. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Wait a few seconds. The test finishes on its own and the boiler continues to S.00 or into a burn. Nothing to press.
If a self-test status is followed by an F code — F.0, F.1, F.10, F.11, F.73 or F.74 — the sensor failed its test. Read that page; the codes name the sensor and an engineer replaces it.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

Nothing. A sensor that fails its self-test raises its own fault code, and that page carries the cost.

Related Vaillant fault codes
- S.08Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.08 is the burner anti-cycling time: the boiler has just finished a heating burn and is deliberately waiting, up to about twenty minutes, before it is allowed to relight.Related: status codes
- S.31Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.31 is summer mode: heating has been switched off at the boiler while hot water carries on. If you want the radiators back, turn the heating flow temperature up from "Heating off".Related: status codes
- S.30Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.30 means the room thermostat or programmer is not asking for heat, so the boiler is idle on purpose. If the house is cold, look at the thermostat, not the boiler.Related: status codes
- S.34Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.34 is frost protection: the boiler has fired by itself because its flow temperature dropped below 5 °C, and it will warm the water to about 30 °C and stop.Related: status codes
- S.40Get it checkedNot a lockout, but not normal either: comfort protection mode. The boiler has detected a fault and is running on with reduced comfort. Its fault memory will say what it found.Related: status codes
- S.88Usually simple to fixNot a fault. S.88 means the purging programme is running: the pump is cycling to push air out of the boiler, 7.5 minutes per circuit, and the burner stays off until it finishes.Related: status codes

Common questions about Vaillant S.96
Are S.96, S.97 and S.98 faults?
No. They are the boiler checking its return sensor, pressure sensor, and flow and return sensors respectively. Vaillant list them among the status codes, and they block heat demands only for the seconds the test takes.
Why does the boiler pause before it fires?
Often this. A short self-test precedes a burn so that the boiler knows its sensors can be trusted before it lights gas. It is the same reason S.01 and S.02, the fan and pump pre-run, appear first.
What is S.99?
The general "Vaillant self-test", or on the ecoFIT "internal automatic test programmes": the same family without a named sensor. S.92 is the water circulation volume self-test on the plus, pro and exclusive.
