Viessmann Fd fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Burner control unit fault, which Viessmann first blame on the ignition electrodes, their cables or electrical interference, and only then on the unit. FF is the same row. Engineer job.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Viessmann properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann Fd

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What Fd means

Fd and FF share a row on the two-character Vitodens units. On the WB1A, WB1B, WB1C, B1HA/B1KA and B1HC/B1KC, the 111-W B1LA to B1LD and the 050-W BPJD both read "Burner blocked — Burner control unit fault — Check ignition electrodes and connecting cables. Check whether a strong interference (EMC) field exists near the appliance. Press Reset. Replace control unit if fault persists." The order of those measures is the useful part. The ignition electrodes sit millimetres from the burner and are fed several kilovolts by the ignition module; a cracked insulator or a lead routed against the casing lets that energy arc somewhere it should not, and the burner control unit's supervision sees the disturbance as a fault in itself. Hence the EMC line — Viessmann are telling the contractor that a healthy control unit can throw Fd because of what is happening around it.

On the Vitotronic 200-W B2HA and 242-F B2UA Fd means something else: "Burner in a fault state, and additional fault b7 is displayed — Coding card missing — Insert coding card. Press reset button R." The coding card is the small plug-in module that tells a Vitotronic control unit which boiler it is fitted to; without it the unit cannot run. The 2019 B2HB edition returns to the 100-W meaning and adds "If the fault occurs sporadically, replace the coding card." FF on a Vitotronic unit is different again — "Internal fault or reset button R disabled — Restart the appliance" — and has its own page. For the householder, Fd on any unit takes the single reset for that unit and then the contractor. On the 2020-on numeric-table units the closest rows are F.70 and F.77 (HBMU internal fault and data memory).

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann Fd fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Ignition electrodes or their cablesCracked insulation or a lead arcing to the casing. Viessmann's first measure, and the cheapest; an ignition electrode set is a service part.Common
Electrical interference near the applianceViessmann name a strong EMC field. Unsuppressed motors, welding equipment or a badly earthed installation are the usual sources. Rare in a house, but in the table.Occasional
Coding card missing or unseated (Vitotronic B2HA, B2UA)Shown with b7. The card carries the boiler-specific parameters; a unit without it will not run. Refitting it and pressing R is Viessmann's whole measure.Occasional
Burner control unit itselfThe last measure: replace the control unit if the fault persists after the electrodes and environment have been checked.Occasional

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£70–£500

Time on site

1h 30m

Electrodes and leads within a visit are the low figure; a control unit the high one. A reseated coding card on a Vitotronic unit costs a call-out.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
