What F11 means
F11 is a wash pump failure. The wash pump — sometimes called the circulation pump — is the one that drives water up through the spray arms during the cycle. It is not the drain pump, and confusing the two sends you looking in the wrong place: a wash pump problem leaves you with dirty dishes, a drain pump problem leaves you with standing water. What people usually report before this code appears is a machine that seems to run normally, sounds quieter than it used to, and turns out plates that still have food on them. That is because a dishwasher does not soak dishes clean, it blasts them. Take away the force and hot detergent water is just sitting there. Hotpoint route this one straight to an engineer with no owner check, and that is a fair call, because the pump is behind the cabinet rather than accessible from inside the tub. There is one thing worth doing before you book, though, and it costs nothing: take the spray arms off if your model allows and check the jets are clear. Blocked spray arms produce exactly the same complaint of dirty dishes, and if that is what you have, you will have saved yourself a call-out charge.

Is the wash pump the same as the drain pump?
No, and it is the most common mix-up on this code. The wash pump pushes water up to the spray arms during the cycle. The drain pump empties the machine at the end. Dirty dishes point at the first; standing water points at the second.
Anything worth checking before I book an engineer?
Take the spray arms off if your model allows and hold them up to the light. Blocked jets cause dirty dishes too, and clearing them is free. Clean the filters properly while you are there. If the dishes come out clean afterwards, the pump was never the problem.
My dishes were getting worse for weeks before the code appeared. Related?
Very likely the same thing developing. A pump that is failing or partly obstructed loses pressure gradually, so cleaning performance drops off well before the machine gives up and reports it.
