Samsung 3C fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedDishwasherAll Samsung dishwashers. 3E is the same code on UK machinesLast updated

The machine fills but never starts washing. Ignore the American results for this one — they describe a different fault entirely.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Samsung properly.

What 3C means

Samsung describe 3C as the dishwasher filling but never beginning active washing, showing no spray action, and stopping, and their published fix is the simplest on their list: power the unit off for one minute and retry. Their 2024 manual for the DW8500AM series names the fault — a washing pump check, "abnormal working with washing pump" — and routes it to service if it continues. Together that is a precise and unusually helpful pair of descriptions, because it separates this from the faults it gets confused with.

The machine got its water. It is not a fill problem. It simply never did anything with the water once it had it, which points at the wash pump or its drive rather than anything to do with the plumbing. This is also the Samsung code where searching will actively mislead you, and it is worth understanding why. Samsung UK group 3C and 3E as one fault. Samsung’s American site does not: it lists 3C as a pump operation error and 3E, separately, as a high temperature water supply error.

Two different faults on one site, one fault on the other, from the same manufacturer. For a UK machine the UK grouping is the one that applies, but the American page ranks well and reads authoritatively, so somebody with 3E on a British machine can easily end up investigating their hot water supply when the problem is the wash pump. Samsung do the same thing with HC and HE, which suggests it is a general divergence between the two markets rather than a one-off.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung 3C fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Wash pump failed or obstructedThe pump that drives water up to the spray arms. What Samsung’s DW8500AM manual names for 3C, and what their US site calls a pump operation error.Common
Spray arms blocked or jammedArms that cannot turn, or jets clogged with debris and scale. Free to check and worth ruling out first.Common
Heavy foam in the tubWashing-up liquid produces suds that cushion the spray and starve the pump, so it draws air rather than water.Occasional
Wiring or control faultThe pump reported as inactive when the fault is in what drives it. Needs the machine open to distinguish.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Do what Samsung ask first: switch the machine off at the wall for one minute, switch it back on and start the programme again.

  2. If it stops again, open the door and look for foam. If the tub is full of suds, that is your answer — run rinse cycles with no detergent until it clears.

  3. Switch off at the wall, then take out the lower basket and turn each spray arm by hand. They should move freely.

  4. Clean the nozzles the way Samsung’s manual describes: pull out the upper rack, loosen and remove the nut and lift the upper nozzle off; pull out the lower rack and lift the lower nozzle out of the base. Clear the jets — a cocktail stick rather than anything metal — rinse, refit, tightening the upper nut by hand only, and rotate each arm to make sure it is engaged.

Samsung warn that the nozzles may break as they are removed. Do not force them.
  5. Clean the filter assembly in the base of the tub while you have it apart: filter handle anticlockwise to unlock, coarse filter then the micro filter beneath it out, rinse, refit, handle clockwise to lock.

  6. Restore power and run a short programme and listen. A machine that fills and then falls silent before stopping on 3C again is telling you the pump is not running, and that is a service call.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung 3C

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£260

Time on site

40 minutes

Free if it is spray arms or foam. A wash pump is typically £130 to £250 fitted, subject to parts being available for an older model.

Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Common questions about Samsung 3C

A Samsung page says 3E is a hot water supply error. Which is right?

Both, for their own market. Samsung UK group 3C and 3E as one fault, which is the fill-but-no-wash description on this page. Samsung US split them, listing 3C as a pump operation error and 3E as a high temperature water supply error. For a UK machine, follow the UK grouping.

How do I know whether the spray arms are turning?

Start a cycle, wait until you can hear water moving, then open the door part way. Stand back as you do it because of the steam. Arms that are stationary while water is being pumped confirm the problem.

Is a wash pump worth replacing?

Ask for the total before the part is ordered, and ask about availability. Samsung UK still sell dishwashers, but the range turns over quickly, and on an older machine the deciding factor may be whether the part can still be had rather than what it costs.
