Samsung C-A1 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedMicrowaveSamsung over-the-range microwaves with an extraction damper. Not applicable to countertop or built-in microwaves without ducting. Published by Samsung as one row covering C-A1 and E-A1.Last updated

The vent damper has not been sensed opening or closing within a minute. A code only the over-the-range models can show.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Samsung properly. Whatever the fault turns out to be, leave the outer casing alone. A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that stays charged after the plug is out, so unplugging it does not make the inside of it safe.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung C-A1

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What C-A1 means

C-A1 is the one code on Samsung’s published list that most owners will never see, and knowing why narrows things down usefully. Samsung describe it as appearing when the microwave fails to sense the damper to open or close for one minute. A damper is a hinged flap in an extraction duct, and it exists only on microwaves that double as a cooker hood — the over-the-range models mounted above a hob, which draw air from underneath and push it either outside or back into the room through filters. A countertop microwave has no duct and no damper and cannot produce this code.

So the first thing this tells you is which appliance you own. The damper matters more than a flap sounds. It is what stops air travelling the wrong way through the duct when the fan is off, and its position is what the appliance checks to know the extraction path is actually open before it runs the fan. A damper that has not moved within a minute of being told to is either jammed, disconnected from its motor, or being reported wrongly by the sensing switch. Grease is very often the answer, because everything in an extraction path above a hob accumulates it and a hinge running in cooled fat stops moving smoothly.

Samsung publish no owner remedy — their action is to unplug the appliance and contact the service centre — and the sensible reading is that reaching a damper means being inside the ducting rather than the cavity. It is worth saying what this code is not: it has nothing to do with the microwave function, the magnetron or the door interlocks.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung C-A1 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Damper jammed by grease build-upEverything in an extraction path above a hob collects fat, and a hinge in cooled grease stops moving freely.Common
Damper motor or actuator failedThe appliance commands the movement and nothing happens, so the minute elapses with no change sensed.Common
Position sensing switch faultyThe damper moves correctly and the appliance cannot tell, which produces an identical code.Occasional
Ducting obstructed or wrongly installedA flap fouling on ductwork or a crushed run stops it reaching the position it is trying to report.Occasional

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£90–£180

Time on site

10 minutes

Typically £90 to £180 with a visit. A damper or its actuator is not an expensive part, but the appliance is mounted above a hob and usually has to come off the wall to reach it.

Common questions about Samsung C-A1

My microwave sits on the worktop. Could I get this code?

No. A damper belongs to an extraction duct, and only microwaves mounted above a hob as a cooker hood have one. If your appliance is a countertop or a built-in microwave with no extraction, this code does not apply to it and something else is going on.

Can I still use the microwave function?

The appliance has stopped and reported a fault, so it is not offering you the choice. Mechanically the damper has nothing to do with the microwave side, but Samsung’s instruction is to unplug it and contact them rather than to work around it, and a code that stops an appliance is not one to defeat.

Would cleaning the filters help?

It is good practice on any appliance in an extraction path and grease is a plausible cause here, so it is not a waste of time. But the damper itself sits in the ducting rather than behind the filters, and Samsung offer no owner remedy for this code, which is a fair signal about how accessible it is.
