AEG C4 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
A steam function is switched on and it blocks the pyrolytic cycle. The catch is that AEG give the button two different names on the same support page.
Before you start
What C4 means
C4 has one advantage over the other three C codes: it is unambiguous. AEG’s pyrolytic cleaning menu names only three cycles, C1 through C3, so there is no C4 cleaning option for this to be mistaken for. Whatever else is going on, a C4 on the display is the fault. The fault itself is straightforward and the instruction for clearing it is not.
The oven will not begin a pyrolytic clean while its steam function is engaged, and turning that function off clears the code. The difficulty is finding the control, because AEG name it twice and differently in a single article: the prose calls it the "Steam Bake Button" and tells you it is lit when active, while the table immediately below calls it the "Plus Steam button" and, within one table row, spells it both Plus Steam and Plus steam.
An owner looking along the fascia for a button marked Steam Bake when the panel actually says Plus Steam will conclude their oven does not have one. Both names are AEG’s. The physical control is the same. The useful detail buried in the prose is the tell: whatever it is labelled, the button carries a small indicator light, and that light being on is how you know the function is active.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The steam function is switched on | The only cause AEG publish. The oven treats added moisture and a pyrolytic burn-off as incompatible, and refuses the second while the first is selected. | Common |
| It was left selected from a previous cook | Steam assist is usually chosen for bread and roasting, and the setting can persist into the next thing you ask the oven to do without being obvious. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Look along the fascia for a button with a small light showing in it. Ignore what it is called — the lit indicator is the reliable identifier here, not the wording.
Press it once to deselect. The light in the button should go out, which is AEG’s stated confirmation that the function is off.
Start the pyrolytic programme again.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AEG C4
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

- C1Usually simple to fixCheck first whether you picked C1 off the cleaning menu, where it is the one-hour light clean. As a fault it means the telescopic rails are still in the oven.Related: pyrolytic cleaning
- PYRUsually simple to fixA reminder to run a self-clean, not a fault. The important part: the oven is counting hours rather than detecting dirt, so a spotless oven will still ask.Related: pyrolytic cleaning
- C2Usually simple to fixAs a fault, the food probe is still in the oven and the pyrolytic cycle will not run. As a menu choice, C2 is simply the 90-minute normal clean.Related: pyrolytic cleaning
- F1Get it checkedOne code, two published meanings. On a pyrolytic AEG oven it is about the door not closing. On a non-pyrolytic one AEG call it an electronic fault and send you straight to service.Related: same brand
- DemoUsually simple to fixThe oven lights up, accepts settings and never heats. AEG admit demo mode can switch itself on after a power cut, and the code to switch it off is 2 4 6 8.Related: same brand
