AEG Loc fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The function lock. It stops the temperature and timer being changed mid-cook, and unlike the child lock it can only be set while the oven is actually running.

What Loc means
Loc is the narrower of AEG’s two locks and the one people understand least, largely because it behaves differently from the child lock in three ways. It can only be turned on while the oven is switched on. It does not stop the oven working — it prevents the temperature and time settings being changed accidentally, which is its entire purpose. And it announces itself twice: Loc appears for about five seconds when you set it, and then again every time you turn the temperature knob or press a button while it is active.
That second behaviour is what brings people here, because an oven flashing Loc at every touch looks like a machine refusing to co-operate rather than one doing exactly what it was told. There is one genuinely surprising detail in AEG’s documentation. Turning the oven function knob while the function lock is on stops the oven. And switching the oven off while the lock is set converts it into a child lock, so the message you come back to will be SAFE rather than Loc.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The function lock was set during a cook | Its only route in. AEG are explicit that you can only turn this function on when the oven is already switched on and running a programme. | Common |
| The two-button combination was pressed by accident | Held for three seconds, and on a touch fascia that is easily done while wiping the panel down or moving a hot dish past it. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Leave the oven switched on. The function lock is cleared by the same press that set it, and that press works while the oven is running.
Hold the two lock buttons together for three seconds. AEG show these as symbols rather than naming them, so use the Additional Functions chapter of your manual to identify them.
If you switch the oven off first and come back to SAFE on the display, that is expected. AEG document the function lock converting itself to a child lock at switch-off, and the child lock has its own unlock sequence.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AEG Loc
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Common questions about AEG Loc
Why does Loc keep reappearing every time I touch a control?
That is the designed behaviour rather than a fault. AEG state that Loc shows for five seconds when you set it, and will also appear whenever you turn the temperature knob or press any button while the lock is active. It is the oven explaining why it just ignored you.
I turned the function knob and the oven stopped. Is that the lock?
Yes, and AEG document it in one line: when you turn the knob for the oven functions, the oven stops. The function lock protects the temperature and timer settings, not the main function selector, so moving that one still takes effect.
AEG say hold for three seconds but another page says two. Which is right?
Three, for the UK. The two-second figure appears on Electrolux Group’s Irish site rather than the British one. We have used the UK figure and would add AEG’s own caveat, which is that the exact method varies by model and the manual governs.
