AEG SAFE fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
SAFE or a padlock symbol means one of three things on an AEG oven, and only one of them needs you to do anything. Work out which before you start pressing buttons.
Before you start
What SAFE means
AEG use a padlock symbol for three separate states and the article covering it is unusually clear about the distinction, which is useful because the remedy differs completely. SAFE with a padlock is the child lock, and their description of it is that the oven cannot be turned on accidentally. A padlock on its own, during or after a self-clean, is the pyrolytic door lock — nothing for you to do at all, because AEG state the door unlocks automatically once the oven has cooled to a safe temperature. And Loc is the function lock, which is a different thing again and has its own page.
The trap here is a sentence AEG bury at the end of their function lock instructions: when you turn the oven off while the function lock is on, the function lock switches automatically to the child lock. An owner who set one lock, switched off, and came back to a different message has not developed a second fault. The appliance changed state by design.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The child lock has been switched on | Deliberately or otherwise. It is a two-button press held for three seconds with the function knob at off, which is not hard to do by accident while cleaning the fascia. On the interfaces AEG document it also locks the door — "The door is locked" is the last step of their child-lock procedure — so a cold oven with SAFE showing and a door that will not open is one fault, not two. | Common |
| A pyrolytic cycle is running or the cavity is still hot | In this case the padlock is doing its job and there is no action to take. AEG are explicit that the door releases itself once the oven has cooled down. | Common |
| A function lock has converted itself into a child lock | AEG document this transition in their own instructions. Switching the oven off while a function lock is active promotes it to the child lock without telling you. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
First work out whether the oven is hot. If it is, and you have run a clean cycle, the padlock is the pyrolytic lock and the answer is to wait rather than to press anything.
For the child lock, turn the knob for the heating functions to the OFF position first. AEG make this a precondition of the unlock, not an optional tidy-up.
Hold the two lock buttons together for three seconds. Which two they are varies by model and AEG’s web article shows them as symbols that do not survive as text, so check the Additional Functions chapter of your manual.
Listen for the signal tone and watch SAFE clear from the display. AEG note that the same press both sets and clears the lock, so if nothing happens you may have just set it again.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AEG SAFE
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

- F240Get it checkedThe touch controls are not registering properly. AEG class this as owner-fixable and their remedy is to clean the display, which is less dismissive than it sounds.Related: controls and clock
- F908Get it checkedThe oven cannot talk to its own control panel. AEG define this one in the manual and leave it out of the code list on their website, where it appears only as an example.Related: controls and clock
- LocUsually simple to fixThe function lock. It stops the temperature and timer being changed mid-cook, and unlike the child lock it can only be set while the oven is actually running.Related: controls and clock

Common questions about AEG SAFE
Which two buttons does AEG mean?
We cannot tell you, and we would rather say so than guess. AEG’s instruction reads "Press at the same time for 3 seconds" with the buttons shown as inline graphics that are lost when the page is read as text. The manual for your specific model has them, in the chapter AEG call Additional Functions.
The door is locked and the oven is cold. Is that still the pyrolytic lock?
Check the display first. If it reads SAFE, the door may be held by the child lock itself rather than by anything to do with cleaning: the fourth step of AEG’s own child-lock procedure is "The door is locked", so clearing the child lock releases it. If the display shows only a padlock and the oven is genuinely cold, AEG say the pyrolytic lock should have released once the appliance cooled, and their published step is to isolate it at the mains, wait ten minutes, restore power and restart it. Note that ten minutes is a longer interval than the thirty seconds AEG specify for every other reset.
What is the difference between SAFE and Loc?
SAFE is the child lock and stops the oven being switched on at all. Loc is the function lock and only stops the temperature and time being changed while the oven is running. AEG document them as separate features with separate purposes.
