Miele F55 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The safety switch-off has operated after an unusually long run. Miele say the oven is ready for use again immediately — off, on, and carry on.

What F55 means
This is a feature rather than a failure, and Miele describe it as one. Their published cause is that the oven has switched itself off automatically during use, that this safety switch-off activates when the oven has been operating for an unusually long period, and that the period depends on the operating mode selected. Their remedy is three short instructions: switch the oven off and then back on again, the oven is ready for use again immediately, start a new cooking process. There is nothing to check, nothing to clean and nothing to buy.
On text-display models the same event is worded rather than numbered: Miele’s en-GB manual lists “Maximum operating hours reached” with the same cause, an unusually long run triggering the safety switch-off, and clears it with a single press of OK.
The thing worth understanding is what triggers it. An oven that has been left running for many hours — a slow cook that overran, a dial nudged on and forgotten, a timer that was never set — reaches a point where the appliance concludes nobody is attending to it and stops heating. That is a protection against an oven left on indefinitely, and it is the single most benign entry in Miele’s code set. If it happens repeatedly on cooks that are not unusually long, that is a different question and worth raising, but a one-off after a long session is exactly what the feature is for.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The oven ran for longer than the safety limit for that mode | Miele state the limit varies by operating mode without publishing the figures, so a long low-temperature cook and a short high-temperature one behave differently. | Common |
| The oven was left on unintentionally | The situation the protection exists for. A dial left set or a cook forgotten about will eventually reach the limit and the oven will stop itself. | Common |
What to try yourself
Switch the oven off and then back on again. This is Miele’s published remedy in full.
Start a new cooking process. Miele state the oven is ready for use again immediately, so there is no cooling period to wait out.
If it recurs on cooks that are not unusually long, note how long the oven had been running when it stopped and mention that if you call, because the pattern is the diagnostic information.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F55
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

- F38Get it checkedAn electronic module fault. One of only two Miele oven codes with no owner remedy at all — their answer is to book a repair, and nothing else.Related: controls and clock
- F33Get it checkedThe pyrolytic door lock will not open. One of only two codes Miele’s own manual acknowledges, and the one where cutting the power is the wrong instinct.Related: same brand
- F32Get it checkedThe pyrolytic door lock will not close, so the clean cannot start. Miele have you check the seal for a foreign object, which is often the whole answer.Related: same brand
- F134Stop — call an engineerThe sensor is reading the cavity as too hot. Miele give no owner remedy for this one, and they conspicuously withhold advice they publish for a related code.Related: same brand
- F23Get it checkedThe pyrolytic clean never reached temperature, and Miele name the reason: too much loose soiling in the cavity. Clear the worst of it and run it again.Related: same brand
