AGA 011 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
AGA’s eR7 service manual lists 010 to 014 as a full power time-out: a cooking zone took too long to reach temperature. AGA’s first action is customer education, then the thermocouple.
Take care
When did the code appear?
The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.
Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.
When did the code appear?
This is the pattern AGA’s service manual attributes to the way the cooker is being operated. The zone was asked to reach temperature while being loaded and timed out.
Clear the zone, shut the doors and let it heat empty for the time AGA give in the warm-up table. Load it once the indicator shows it is ready. Ring AGA Service only if it recurs.
When did the code appear?
A time-out with nothing slowing the zone points at the thermocouple, which is AGA’s second listed action, or at the zone having locked after repeated errors.
Record the code and how often it has appeared, then ring AGA Service. The thermocouple check and the board reset are engineer work and AGA do not publish either for owners.
When did the code appear?
AGA’s control locks a zone after four blocking errors in twenty-four hours, or at once for a locking fault. Cycling the power does not clear a locked zone; only the board reset does.
Stop using that zone and book AGA Service with the code. Do not switch the cooker off and on repeatedly hoping to clear it; AGA state that cycling the power will not reset the controls.
What 011 means
This is the one AGA code family with a published meaning, and the publication is not the owner guide. It comes from the Aga eR7 Field Service Manual, the document AGA Rangemaster wrote for the engineers who work on the electric eR7, where the error table lists codes 010 to 014 for all zones as Full power time out and explains the term: a full power time out is a safety feature implemented to show the cooking zone is taking too long to reach its expected temperature. The eR7 has five zones, the boiling plate, the simmer plate and the roasting, baking and simmer ovens, and the five codes in the range cover them, so 011 is a time-out on one specific zone; which one is not stated in the text and this page does not guess.
What AGA do say is unusually candid for an error table. Full power time-out errors may be caused by the way the cooker is being operated, and the causes they list are heat-up time not allowed before use, doors left open, oversized pans, overly full pans, and a cold plain shelf left in the simmer oven while heating up. The action column reads customer education, check position of thermocouple, in that order. In other words, AGA’s own first assumption for 011 is that the cooker was asked to do something a heat-storage cooker cannot, such as boil a stockpot from cold with the lid up or heat an oven with the door propped, and the element ran flat out for longer than the control allows before the zone got where it was going.
AGA describe two classes of error without saying which class each code belongs to. A blocking error disables the zone, is reassessed periodically, and locks the zone if it is still present at the fourth assessment or recurs four times in twenty-four hours; a locking error locks the zone at the first detection. Either way a locked zone needs an engineer’s reset, which AGA say customers are not to be instructed in, and cycling the power does not clear it. The second cause is the sensor. Each zone has a duplex thermocouple attached to its element by a bracket, and AGA note that a thermocouple sitting out of position, or one that tests fine cold and drifts apart hot, reports a zone as slow when the element is doing its job. The service manual is the North American edition, for the 240 volt 60 hertz eR7; the control system is the same Tekelek board and TEK Vision software as the UK cooker, and that provenance is stated here rather than assumed away.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Heat-up time not allowed before use | AGA’s first listed cause. An eR7 zone brought up from cold and loaded immediately is asked to heat the pan and the cast iron together, and the control times out before it gets there. | Common |
| Doors left open while heating | An oven heating with its door ajar never reaches the target the control is waiting for. AGA list it here and warn about door-open lock-outs in the owner guide. | Common |
| Oversized or overly full pans on the hotplates | A stockpot covering the whole boiling plate drags the plate temperature down faster than a 2.5 kW element can recover it. Two of AGA’s five listed causes. | Common |
| Cold plain shelf left in the simmer oven | AGA’s fifth cause and the most AGA-specific. The plain shelf is a heat sink; left in the simmer oven during heat-up it delays the zone past the time-out. | Occasional |
| Thermocouple out of position or drifting | AGA’s engineer action after customer education is to check the thermocouple position. They also note thermocouples that test fine at room temperature and drift apart when hot. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Write the code down exactly as shown, with anything displayed alongside it, before touching the controls. AGA ask for the code at the time the fault is reported, and the temporary log is cleared when an engineer resets the board.
Think back to what the zone was doing. A time-out in the first hour after switching on from cold, with a pan already on the plate or a door open, is the operating pattern AGA describe, not a component fault.
Take the pan off, close the doors, and remove the plain shelf from the simmer oven if it is in there. Then let the zone heat with nothing on it. AGA’s warm-up table in the owner guide gives how long each zone needs.
Use the zone normally once its indicator shows it is at temperature. If the code does not return, AGA’s own action for it, customer education, has been completed by you.
If 011 comes back on an empty zone with the doors shut, or the zone has stopped responding, ring AGA Service and read out the code. Recurring time-outs lock the zone, and the reset and the thermocouple check are the engineer’s.
Do not try to reset the board yourself or open the cooker. AGA state in the service manual that customers should not be instructed on how to reset the PCB, and the owner guide says the appliance must only be maintained by a qualified engineer, an AGA engineer or an authorised distributor.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AGA 011
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Nothing if it is the operating pattern AGA describe, which is their own first assumption. A thermocouple is a listed spare and a visit; AGA route all work to their own engineers or authorised distributors, so there is little scope to shop around.

Common questions about AGA 011
Is 011 the same as the other codes in 010 to 014?
Same fault, different zone. AGA list the whole range as full power time-out on all zones, one code per cooking zone. Which digit is which zone is not in the text this page is built from, so tell AGA Service the exact number.
Can I reset it by switching the cooker off?
No. AGA state that cycling the power will not reset the controls and does not clear a locked condition; the reset is a button on the main PCB, and they say customers should not be instructed how to use it. A zone that has merely blocked reassesses itself; a locked one needs the engineer. AGA do not say which of the two classes a full power time-out falls into.
Where does this meaning come from, if AGA publish none?
From the Aga eR7 Field Service Manual for the USA and Canada, written by AGA Rangemaster for their engineers and hosted by their North American retailers. The owner guides give no meanings. The two are reconciled on this page by saying which document each statement is from.
My handset shows something like n 3.11, not 011.
The owner guides show that form as an example and the service manual uses three-digit codes. AGA do not publish how the two relate, so read whatever your handset shows to AGA Service exactly as displayed rather than converting it.
