AGA n 3.11 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedRange cookerLast updated

AGA’s owner guides confirm error codes exist and publish one example of the format, n 3.11, with no meanings. The owner remedy for every code is to tell AGA Service.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the AGA properly.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AGA n 3.11

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Can you actually read a number on the handset?

The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.

Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.

Can you actually read a number on the handset?

You are holding the only diagnostic AGA provide. It is worth more than any description you could give an engineer over the phone.

Record it verbatim, then ring AGA Service and read it out. Ask them to tell you what it refers to and keep their answer with your paperwork.

Can you actually read a number on the handset?

The handset is where AGA say the code appears, and the panel behind the top left door shows a fault only as rapidly flashing zone lights, so the number cannot be read until the handset works. Batteries come before anything else.

Fit new batteries. If the handset stays dead, report the handset itself as the fault rather than describing the cooker’s symptoms; AGA say a lost or damaged handset can be replaced and re-programmed to your appliance.

Can you actually read a number on the handset?

A cold AGA with no code is more often a mode than a fault. Slumber is a real low-power holding state and the cooker sits in it between AUTO events, and AGA also warn that running the cooker with its doors open can cause a lock-out.

Press the M button to return to manual mode, which is AGA’s published route out of AUTO and AUTO/Slumber — for a Slumber setting made by hand the guide says press and hold M for three seconds — and check the doors have been closed. If it is still cold, ring AGA Service.

What n 3.11 means

There is exactly one published sentence about AGA error codes, and this page is built on it rather than around it. Under the servicing and warranty heading, the eR7 and eR7i user guides say that in the unlikely event an error occurs, error codes may be displayed on your handset, for example: n 3.11, and ask you to provide AGA Service with that information because it will assist the service engineer in diagnosing your fault. Four things follow from those two lines and they are worth separating. First, AGA are not concealing the mechanism: they tell you plainly that the cooker generates codes and that you will be shown one. Second, the example they give is not really a code, it is a shape — a decimal-point number rather than the E-something or F-something that the rest of the market uses. Reading it as a group and an item within that group is the natural interpretation, but AGA nowhere say so, and we are not going to pretend they have. Third, the owner guides publish no meanings whatsoever: not a table, not a partial list, not one worked example of a number tied to a component.

The meanings do exist, in AGA’s own field service manual for the eR7, which is written for their engineers and organises the codes as three-digit numbers by fault type and zone; where this site carries one of those, as with 011, the page says so and cites the document, and how those three-digit codes relate to the n 3.11 form on the handset is not something AGA publish. Fourth, the owner remedy is the same for every code the cooker is capable of producing: read the number to AGA Service. So the honest answer to what n 3.11 means on an AGA is that the manufacturer has decided that question belongs to their own engineer. Anybody offering you a decoded list of AGA numbers that does not come from AGA’s service literature is guessing or has copied someone else’s guess, and we will not publish one either. What is genuinely useful is knowing that the number matters and that it is perishable. Write it down exactly as it appears, digits, space and decimal point, before anybody switches the cooker off, because an engineer arriving at a cooker that has since been power-cycled has lost the only diagnostic AGA gave you.

One structural detail deserves its own attention. The owner guides say the code may be displayed on the handset, and the handset is a battery-powered remote, so an owner who has mislaid it, or whose batteries have gone flat, has lost the place AGA tell them to look. The cooker is not entirely mute: the eR7 has a control panel behind the top left hand door with LED indicators and a character display, and AGA’s service manual says most faults show there as the zone lights flashing rapidly, while the panel display itself carries only three codes of its own, FE, VE and CE, about the panel and its connection to the main board. But a flashing light tells an engineer far less than the number does, and the guide also says a damaged or lost handset can be replaced by AGA and re-programmed to the appliance. That makes fresh batteries and a known home for the handset a diagnostic precaution rather than housekeeping.

What causes it

Causes of the AGA n 3.11 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The cooker has logged a fault and named itThe control has identified something specific and issued its own reference for it. The number means a great deal to AGA Service and nothing to anybody else.Common
No published meaning exists for the numberAGA release the format and the phone route only, so there is nowhere legitimate to look the code up and no list to check it against.Common
The number was noted wrongly, or not at allA half-remembered figure wastes a visit. The engineer is being asked to work from the code, so an approximation is worse than useless.Common
A flat or missing handset, so the code cannot be readThe handset is where AGA say the code may appear. The control panel behind the top left door shows a fault as rapidly flashing zone lights, which tells you something is wrong but not which number to read out.Occasional

15 minutes

The call costs nothing and the number is free to read out. What follows depends entirely on what AGA Service say the code refers to, and because they publish no meanings there is no honest way to put a range on it before you have spoken to them. AGA route all work to their own engineers or authorised distributors, which limits how much shopping around is possible.

Common questions about AGA n 3.11

What does n 3.11 mean?

AGA print that number in the owner guides as an example of what a code looks like, not as a code with a meaning, and they do not publish how the handset form relates to the three-digit codes in their service manual. Any site claiming to translate n 3.11 itself has made the translation up.

Why will you not publish a list of AGA codes?

We publish only what AGA have written. The eR7 and eR7i owner guides give the format, the example and the phone route and nothing else; AGA’s field service manual for the eR7 gives three-digit codes by fault type, and the codes on this site that come from it, such as 011, say so. Nothing is filled in from anywhere else.

Is the code on the cooker anywhere?

Not as a number you can read out. The owner guides say codes may be displayed on the hand-held handset, which is battery powered. The control panel behind the top left door has LED indicators and a character display, and AGA’s service manual says most faults show there as the zone lights flashing rapidly; the only codes that panel carries itself are FE, VE and CE, which are about the panel and its link to the main board. So a flat handset is worth ruling out first, and it is worth knowing where yours lives before you need it.

Where do I download the user guide?

AGA host their guides on agaliving.com, but their own document store link returns a not-found error while their product pages still tell owners to visit it, so the practical route is a search engine rather than browsing the support site. As at 3 September 2026 the customer support page served no PDF links at all in its HTML and the user guides page redirected to a not-found page.
