Belling ER03 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Usually simple to fixRange cookerPublished in both generations of Glen Dimplex induction documentation. The wording quoted here is Belling’s 2025-generation text for the 100cm and 110cm electric induction models.Last updated

Belling list ER03 as an information code rather than a fault: something is covering the touch control area. Remove it, clean the glass, and the hob works normally again.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the range cooker.

What is actually on the control area?

The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.

Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.

What is actually on the control area?

This is the straightforward case and Belling’s remedy covers it exactly. Removing the item and cleaning the area is the whole fix.

Remove the item, clean the area, then use the hob again.

What is actually on the control area?

Then you are almost certainly looking at the invisible version: water, grease or fingerprints. Belling list all three as obstructions on the same footing as a pan.

Dry the control area, then clean it, keeping your hand clear of the keys.

What is actually on the control area?

At that point the obstruction explanation has run out. Belling publish no further diagnosis for ER03, so their catch-all reset is the next published step.

Switch off at the wall for a few minutes, restore power, and contact Belling customer care on 0344 815 3746 if the code reappears.

What ER03 means

Belling open their induction code section with a distinction worth holding onto: “The hob display can show information codes, and codes to alert you to any issues which may need to be resolved.” ER03 sits on the information side of that line. Belling’s published meaning is a single word, “Obstruction”, and their description explains what counts as one: “Something is covering the hob control area, such as a pan, utensil or cloth, or even just water, grease or finger prints. Remove any items and clean the area before using the hob again. Do not touch any of the hob touch control keys for more than 10 seconds.”

Two things follow from that wording. The first is how little it takes. A pan pushed too far forward will do it, but so will a wet cloth left across the front of the glass, a splash from a pan that has boiled over, or a smear of grease with fingerprints in it. The touch controls sense a change in capacitance through the glass, and they cannot tell the difference between a finger and a puddle sitting in the same place, so the hob assumes it is being held and stops rather than acting on an instruction nobody gave.

The second is the ten-second instruction, which is easy to skim past. Belling ask you not to touch any hob touch control key for more than ten seconds. A continuous touch is exactly what an obstruction looks like to the control, so resting a hand on the panel while you clean it, or leaning on the front edge of the hob, can reproduce the code you are trying to clear. Clean with a dry cloth first, then a damp one, and keep your hand off the keys while you do it. The 2022-generation Glen Dimplex table publishes the same code with narrower wording — “Water or pans on the glass above the user controls”, with a continuous tone — and the remedy “Clean any water on surface above user controls/display”. If your manual lists E6 and E8, that is the table you are reading, and the audible tone belongs with it.

What causes it

Causes of the Belling ER03 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
A pan sitting over the control areaThe most common version on a range cooker top, where a large pan slid forward on the glass can reach the front control strip without the cook noticing.Common
Water or a boil-over across the touch keysBelling name water explicitly. A film of liquid over the sensors reads as a sustained touch, and the 2022-generation table gives water as the whole cause.Common
Grease and fingerprints on the glassListed by Belling alongside water. This is the version that appears with nothing on the hob at all, which is why it gets mistaken for a control fault.Occasional
A cloth, utensil or oven glove left on the panelAnything resting on the control area counts, including a tea towel folded over the front rail so that one end lies on the glass.Occasional
A hand held on a key for more than ten secondsBelling publish this as an instruction not to do it. A sustained touch is indistinguishable from an obstruction, so leaning on the panel can trigger the code.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Move every pan, utensil and cloth clear of the control area at the front of the glass, not just the ones directly over the keys.

  2. Wipe the control area dry with a cloth. Belling name water, grease and fingerprints as obstructions in their own right, so a visibly clean hob can still be triggering the code.

  3. Clean the area properly once it is dry, keeping your hand off the touch keys while you work.

Belling publish the instruction not to touch any hob touch control key for more than 10 seconds. A long touch looks like an obstruction to the control and will bring the code back.
  4. Use the hob again. Belling describe no reset for ER03 beyond removing the obstruction and cleaning.

  5. If the code returns with the glass clean, dry and clear, use Belling’s catch-all: switch the appliance off at the wall for a few minutes to let the electronics reset, and if it reappears when the power is restored, contact customer care on 0344 815 3746.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Belling ER03

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Common questions about Belling ER03

Is ER03 a fault?

Belling divide their hob display messages into information codes and codes alerting you to an issue that needs resolving, and ER03 belongs with the information. Nothing has failed — the hob has found something on its control area and stopped rather than act on a touch you did not make.

Why does ER03 show when there is nothing on the hob?

Because Belling count water, grease and fingerprints as obstructions, not just objects. A film of liquid or a greasy smear over the touch sensors reads as a continuous touch. Dry the control area first, then clean it.

What is the ten-second rule about?

Belling publish the instruction not to touch any of the hob touch control keys for more than 10 seconds. A held touch looks the same to the control as something lying on the glass, so leaning on the panel or resting a hand there while cleaning can trigger the code you are trying to clear.

My manual describes ER03 as water on the glass and mentions a continuous tone. Is that the same code?

That is the 2022-generation Glen Dimplex table, which words the same code more narrowly and pairs it with a continuous tone. If your manual also lists E6 and E8, you have that older table. The 2025-generation Belling wording is broader and covers pans, utensils, cloths, water, grease and fingerprints.
