Tesla Powerwall solar or battery system fault codes
Tesla publish no numbered fault code list for the Powerwall. What they publish instead is a set of named app alerts with the exact notification wording, a four-state light on each generation, and a power-cycle sequence in each owner’s manual — and their diagnostic route puts a login in front of anything more specific, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a code that does not exist.
Where the code shows on a Tesla Powerwall
Two generations, two lights, and the tables do not transfer. A Powerwall 3 has one light behind the logo, and its owner’s manual (EMEA/APAC edition) decodes it by colour: solid white is normal operation, flashing white is idle and heading for sleep, off means off or asleep, and flashing red is an inverter fault. Tesla add that Powerwall 3 Expansion units do not have an LED indicator, so the logo on the front is not illuminated — an unlit expansion unit is not a fault. A Powerwall 2 has a light on the right side of the unit, and its owner’s manual decodes it by pattern with no colour named at all: on (solid) is system idle with no faults, on (fading) is enabled and charging or discharging, on (flashing) is a fault present, and off is not enabled or switched off. One version note for Powerwall 2 owners with an older printed manual: the 2018 edition gave a flashing light as "Powerwall enabled/No communication with the Gateway"; the current EMEA edition (April 2022) gives it as "Fault present". Read the current one.
How to reset a Tesla Powerwall
Tesla publish three owner-level restarts, each for a stated situation, and one instruction that sits over all of them: the UK troubleshooting page says not to troubleshoot during a grid outage or in extreme weather conditions. First, the owner’s manuals give a full power cycle for a system that is unresponsive. Powerwall 2 AC Owner’s Manual (EMEA, April 2022): set the Powerwall On/Off switch to OFF, turn off the AC breaker to the Powerwall, turn off the AC breaker to the Gateway (in a whole-home backup system this may be a breaker inside the Backup Gateway), wait at least one minute, turn the AC breakers back on, turn on the Powerwall. Powerwall 3 Owner’s Manual (EMEA/APAC, July 2025): set the On/Off switch to OFF, turn the integrated DC isolator OFF, turn off the AC breaker to Powerwall 3, turn off the AC breaker to the Gateway, wait at least one hour, turn the AC breakers back on, turn on Powerwall 3, turn the DC isolator ON. Both manuals carry the same warning ahead of the sequence: on systems with interconnected solar, turn off the solar inverter or disconnect the solar source before turning off the Powerwall. None of those switches de-energises the solar panels — the strings and the cable from them stay live in daylight, and the Powerwall 3 manual warns that the DC conductors of a connected PV system can become intermittently grounded without indication while the inverter measures array isolation. The Powerwall 2 manual adds that if there is no AC breaker for the Gateway, under no circumstances should you pull a fuse to switch the system off. Second, for a Powerwall that has gone into standby after running low during a power cut or after repeated overloads, Tesla’s UK "Best Practices During Power Cuts" page gives a quick toggle of the on/off switch, or in the app "Powerwall Inactive" then "Restart Powerwall", and only when there is enough clear sky to power the home and charge the battery. Third, the same page says that if that restart fails you can reboot the Gateway with its reset button, which only reboots the Gateway and does not reset any settings. The owner’s manuals frame the reset button and the manual override switch as things Tesla Support may direct you to operate, and warn not to remove the protective label or operate the override switch unless directed. Powerwall and Gateway are not user-serviceable in Tesla’s words, and the deadfront cover inside the Gateway must not be opened.
Most common Tesla Powerwall faults
The Tesla Powerwall codes people look up most.
- Flashing redGet it checkedTesla publish this as an inverter fault on the Powerwall 3. The other states matter more: an unlit expansion unit is normal, so is flashing white, and a Powerwall 2 uses a different table altogether.
- Grid OutageUsually simple to fixNot a fault on a system with a Backup Gateway. Tesla publish the notification text and the behaviour, including that the Powerwall may discharge below your reserve. A Non-Backup Powerwall 3 does none of this.
- Breaker OpenGet it checkedA named app alert meaning the Powerwall’s AC breaker is off. Tesla say switch it back on — unless there is any sign of burning at the distribution board, when you stop and call them.
