Tesla Powerwall Breaker Open

Get it checkedSolar or battery systemThe alert and Tesla’s fix are not generation-specific. The "LED light on the right side" indicator on Tesla’s UK troubleshooting page describes the Powerwall 2’s light; a Powerwall 3’s light is behind the front logo. Side switch: right side on a Powerwall 2, left side on a Powerwall 3, per Tesla’s alerts page.Last updated

A named app alert meaning the Powerwall’s AC breaker is off. Tesla say switch it back on — unless there is any sign of burning at the distribution board, when you stop and call them.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a registered electrician to look at the Tesla Powerwall properly.

What this means

Breaker Open is one of Tesla’s named app alerts, and it is worth knowing because it is one of very few Powerwall conditions where Tesla point the owner at something they can actually look at. The push notification reads "Your Powerwall is disconnected from your home electrical system and cannot operate. This can happen for several reasons, tap here for more information", and Tesla’s explanation on the UK alerts page is a single sentence: the AC breaker that connects your Powerwall to your home is off and needs to be switched back on. The UK troubleshooting page lists two indicators for the condition, the alert itself and "the LED light on the right side of your Powerwall is not turning on" — the right-side light is the Powerwall 2’s; a Powerwall 3’s light is behind the front logo — and describes the consequence as leaving your Powerwall unable to store energy.

So the battery is still there, the system is still running, but nothing is going into it or out of it. The breaker will be in the consumer unit or in a separate enclosure near the Powerwall or the Gateway; Tesla do not publish where, because it depends on the installation. What makes this alert different from a tripped breaker on a socket circuit is the note Tesla attach to it on the troubleshooting page: do not troubleshoot if there are any signs of heat damage — smoke, burning smell or any other signs of burning — to the distribution board, and reach out to Customer Support if you detect heat damage. Tesla do not say why, and they do not need to: heat at a protective device or its terminals is a wiring fault, not a nuisance trip, and resetting past it removes the protection rather than the cause.

Two neighbours of this alert are worth telling apart. "Side Switch Off" is a different banner, meaning the on/off switch on the unit itself is off — on the right side of a Powerwall 2, the left side of a Powerwall 3 — and Tesla note that with the switch off a Powerwall 3’s solar will not generate while a Powerwall 2’s solar may still. "Rapid Shutdown Device Off" means a separate emergency stop or switch near the Powerwall or inverter has been operated. And a battery sitting at 0 per cent for days, or under 10 per cent and not charging, without a Breaker Open alert is something Tesla list under Meter Offline, not under this alert. Finally, do not leave it. Both owner’s manuals caution against letting the electrical feed to the Powerwall be severed for more than one month, and the Powerwall 3 manual adds that a system left non-operational for an extended period may be damaged and its warranty voided.

What causes it

Causes of Tesla Powerwall Breaker Open, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The Powerwall’s AC breaker has trippedThe direct meaning of the alert. Tesla’s wording is that the AC breaker connecting the Powerwall to the home is off and needs to be switched back on.Common
A breaker switched off deliberately and not restoredCommon after electrical work, an installation visit or a house move. The system reports the same alert whether the device tripped or was switched.Common
Heat damage at the distribution boardThe case Tesla single out: do not troubleshoot if there is smoke, a burning smell or any other sign of burning at the distribution board, and contact Customer Support. That is a wiring fault, not a nuisance trip.Occasional
A fault downstream causing the device to operateWhere it trips again after being reset. At that point the protective device is doing its job and the cause is elsewhere on the circuit.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Confirm the alert in the Tesla app rather than working from the light alone, and note the exact name shown. "Side Switch Off" and "Rapid Shutdown Device Off" are different alerts with different fixes.

  2. Find the Powerwall’s AC breaker — in the consumer unit or a separate enclosure by the Powerwall or the Gateway, depending on how it was installed — and look for it in the off or tripped position.

  3. Before touching anything, look at the breaker and its surroundings for smoke, a burning smell or any other sign of burning.

If there is any sign of heat damage, stop. Tesla’s published instruction is not to troubleshoot and to contact Customer Support, and heat at a connection carrying battery current is a wiring fault rather than a nuisance trip.
  4. If everything looks clean, switch the breaker back on once, which is Tesla’s stated fix on the alerts page, and watch the app over the next day.

  5. If it trips again, leave it off and contact Tesla or your certified installer. A device that keeps operating is reporting something real.

  6. Never do any of this during a power cut. Tesla instruct owners not to troubleshoot during a grid outage or in extreme weather, and during an outage the Powerwall is energising the house.

Get a registered electrician to look at your Tesla Powerwall solar or battery system

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a registered electrician, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Nothing if a breaker simply needs switching back on. An electrician or a Tesla visit if it keeps tripping or there is heat damage at a connection, which should not be delayed.

Common questions

Is my battery damaged?

Not by this in itself. Tesla describe the effect as leaving your Powerwall unable to store energy, which is a supply problem rather than damage to the cells. Do not leave it off for weeks, though: both owner’s manuals caution against letting the electrical feed to the Powerwall be severed for more than one month, and the Powerwall 3 manual says a system left non-operational for an extended period may be damaged and its warranty voided.

Can I just switch the breaker back on?

Yes, once, after you have looked at it — that is Tesla’s own instruction on the alerts page. The exception Tesla give is heat damage: if there is smoke, a burning smell or any other sign of burning at the distribution board, do not troubleshoot and contact Customer Support. And do not keep resetting a device that keeps tripping, because it is operating for a reason.

Why do Tesla single out heat damage?

They do not say, and this page will not put words in their mouth. The general electrical point is that discolouration, melting or a hot-plastic smell at a breaker or its terminals is the signature of a loose or degraded connection, and that is a fire risk rather than a tripped breaker. It needs an electrician or Tesla, not a reset.

The battery is not charging but there is no Breaker Open alert.

Look for a different cause. Tesla’s UK troubleshooting page lists a battery level stuck at 0 per cent for several days, or under 10 per cent and not charging, as indicators that the meter is offline, and the "Side Switch Off" banner means the switch on the unit itself is off — right side on a Powerwall 2, left side on a Powerwall 3. A "Calibration in Progress" banner on a Powerwall 3 is also normal, and Tesla say it may not charge from solar while it runs.

The power is off and I have this alert. What now?

Wait. Tesla repeat before every troubleshooting section that you should not troubleshoot during a grid outage or in extreme weather conditions. During an outage the Powerwall is supplying your house, so the wiring around the distribution board is live from the battery even though the grid is dead.
