AEG CE fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Stop — call an engineerTumble dryerAEG, Zanussi and Electrolux dryers with a display showing C codes. AEG give the scope only as "tumble dryer" and publish no machine-type breakdown for the C rangeLast updated

A fault in the electronics. AEG tell you to unplug the machine and not to plug it back in until you are sure it is safe, and they publish no owner checks at all.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AEG CE

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What CE means

AEG give this one in six words — "there is a problem with the electronics" — and then tell you to stop using the machine. There is no cause section, no owner check, and no suggestion that anything you can do will help.

CF carries identical wording and the identical warning. That brevity is not laziness so much as an accurate reflection of the situation: the board that supervises everything the machine does has reported that something is wrong with itself, and there is no meaningful sense in which an owner can investigate that. We rate this as stop rather than get-it-checked for a reason particular to dryers. On a dishwasher, a board fault means the machine misbehaves and possibly leaks.

On a dryer, the board is what decides how long the heater stays on, when the safety cut-outs act and when the cooling phase runs, and it is doing that a few inches from a filter packed with dry lint. A control system that is reporting its own unreliability, in charge of a heating element, is not something to keep running while you decide. Unplug it and leave it unplugged.

What causes it

Causes of the AEG CE fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
A failure on the main control boardA failed component, a dry joint or a track damaged by heat. Dryers run their electronics warm for hours at a time, which is harder on a board than the intermittent duty a washing machine gives one.Common
Moisture or lint ingress onto the boardFine lint carries moisture and settles everywhere air moves. On a board it bridges tracks and holds damp against them, which produces intermittent faults before it produces permanent ones.Occasional
A connector or wiring loom failureHours of vibration work connectors loose over years. From the board’s point of view a connection that has gone high-resistance and a component that has failed look much the same.Occasional
Damage following a supply problemA surge, a brownout or a lightning event on the incoming supply can damage a board outright. If the machine had been showing EH codes beforehand, mention that to the engineer.Rare

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£120–£300

A control board is at the expensive end of dryer repairs and the diagnostic visit comes on top. AEG publish no repair prices — their only published line is that repairs under warranty are free of charge — so these are independent market estimates.

Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Common questions about AEG CE

Can I keep using it if it seems to run normally?

No. AEG’s instruction is to unplug the product and not plug it in again until you are certain it is safe, and on a heating appliance we agree with them. A board that has reported a fault in itself is the part responsible for turning the heater off, and a machine that seems fine is not evidence that it is.

Is CF a different fault from CE?

AEG publish identical wording for both and attach the same warning to each. Whatever separates them internally, they have not told owners, so treat them the same.

Is it worth repairing?

That depends mostly on the age of the machine, because a control board is one of the more expensive parts and the labour is on top. One thing in your favour: AEG commit to keeping printed circuit boards available for at least ten years after a model is discontinued, so age alone does not put the repair out of reach. Get the quote before deciding.

Is there a recall on my machine?

Not for AEG, Zanussi or Electrolux. None of the three appears in any current UK tumble dryer safety action, and both the manufacturer’s own product safety page and the government register agree. If you have read about a dryer recall, it concerns other brands.
