AEG E80 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerCondenser and heat pump machines. AEG give the scope as "Condenser dryer / Heat pump dryer" and do not list vented dryersLast updated

The machine cannot tell which programme you have chosen. AEG’s first suggestion is the one worth trying: check the dial is not parked between two settings.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the AEG properly.

What E80 means

AEG say this "indicates a problem with the cycle selector or the software", and their opening check is refreshingly practical — make sure the selector is not sitting between two programmes. On a machine with a rotary dial, that is a real and easily made mistake. The dial has detents, but a knob that has loosened on its shaft, or one nudged while loading, can rest in the gap between two positions where the board reads neither. It has no way of guessing which you meant, so it stops.

Beyond that, the fault is either the selector itself no longer reporting its position reliably, or the board no longer interpreting what it receives. Two things are worth noting about the scope of this code. AEG list it as applying to condenser and heat pump machines and do not list vented ones, which suggests it belongs to a particular control generation. And of the codes in the range, this is one of the few that has neither a do-not-use warning nor any suggestion of urgency: the machine has declined to start rather than done anything alarming.

What causes it

Causes of the AEG E80 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The programme dial is between two positionsAEG name this first themselves. The board reads a position that corresponds to no programme, and rather than pick one it stops. Costs nothing to check and is the reason the code exists as a separate entry.Common
The selector knob has worked loose on its shaftA knob that turns slightly relative to the shaft underneath will point at one programme while the machine reads another, and eventually will land between two. It feels normal to turn, which is what makes it hard to spot.Occasional
The selector switch itself is failingThe component that converts the dial position into something the board understands wears out, particularly on a machine that has done many cycles. It typically fails on some positions before others, so certain programmes work and others do not.Occasional
A software or control board faultAEG name software alongside the selector, which covers the case where the selector reports correctly and the board mishandles it. Rarer, and not distinguishable from the outside.Rare

What to try yourself

  1. Turn the programme dial firmly to a definite position and feel for it seating in the detent rather than resting between two.

  2. Try a different programme. If some work and others do not, that tells you the selector is failing on particular positions rather than the board being at fault.

  3. Check whether the knob itself is loose by holding it lightly and seeing whether it moves independently of the shaft.

  4. If washing is in the drum, take it out and spread it before you cut the power, then unplug for thirty seconds and plug back in.

AEG give the thirty-second reset for this code but say nothing about the load. Their own manual warns against stopping a dryer mid-cycle with the washing left inside, so we add that step.
  5. Select a short programme and start it. If E80 returns on every programme after a reset, the selector or the board needs an engineer.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your AEG E80

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Free if the dial was simply between settings. A selector switch is a modest part, a control board considerably more. AEG list switches and knobs, and printed circuit boards, among the parts kept for at least ten years after a model is discontinued.

Common questions about AEG E80

My machine has touch controls rather than a dial.

The code still applies — the selector is whatever tells the board which programme you chose, and on a touch panel that is the panel itself. The between-two-positions check obviously will not help you, so go straight to trying a different programme and then the reset.

Why does AEG say this does not affect vented dryers?

They do not say it does not; they list the scope as condenser and heat pump machines and leave vented ones off the list, where their E50 and E60 articles name all three types. We take the omission at face value. It probably reflects which control generation the code belongs to rather than anything about drying itself.

Is it safe to keep using on the programmes that do work?

AEG attach no warning to this code and nothing about it is a safety matter. If two programmes work and one does not, you are not risking anything by using the ones that do, though a selector that is failing tends to keep failing.
