Bosch E19 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
A fault in the heating circuit. BSH offer nothing to try and send it straight to service, and they give E20 the same one-line answer.
Take care
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Bosch E19
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
What E19 means
E19 is a fault in the heating circuit, and it is one of the codes where BSH publish a meaning and then decline to publish a remedy: the whole answer is customer service. That is worth taking at face value rather than as a brush-off. Everything in the heating circuit sits inside the cabinet on mains voltage, submerged in the bottom of the outer tub, and there is no external check an owner can make that distinguishes a failed element from a control fault.
There is one genuinely interesting thing about this code, which is how BSH themselves render it against how their older documentation does. In the current self-help corpus, E19 and E20 carry the same single line — a fault in the heating circuit — which tells a reader nothing about which of the two they have.
Neff, who publish washing machine codes on a separate and older system, distinguish them: E19 is "heating time exceeded" and E20 is "unexpected heating". Those are opposite complaints. Heating time exceeded means the water never got hot enough within the time allowed; unexpected heating means the machine detected the element working when it should not have been. Both point at the same set of parts, which is presumably why BSH collapsed them, but the distinction explains why one machine finishes a cold wash and another stops dead.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Heating element failed | The usual answer, and in a hard water area close to a wear item. Scale insulates the element until it overheats and goes open circuit. | Common |
| Temperature sensing out of range | The board cannot verify the water temperature and will not run the element blind. Produces the same code and a much cheaper part. | Common |
| Heater relay or wiring | The switching side rather than the element. Spade terminals at the element run hot for years and a poor joint there reads as a circuit fault. | Occasional |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£110–£250
A heating element is typically £110 to £190 fitted and a temperature sensor rather less. A board-level heating fault is the expensive end and is where the age of the machine starts to matter.

- E18Get it checkedThe machine could not pump out in the time allowed. Bosch point at the filter and the drain hose, and warn that the water you are about to release may be scalding.Related: same brand
- E17Get it checkedProblems with the water connection: tap, kinked hose, blocked inlet filter or low pressure. Bosch’s AquaStop hose has a filter at the tap end most owners do not know about.Related: same brand
- E23Stop — call an engineerWater has been detected in the base of the machine and the AquaStop system has cut in. Bosch say to turn the tap off immediately and stop using it until it is repaired.Related: same brand
- E32Usually simple to fixAn unbalanced load, and Bosch headline it as the machine flashing "end" at the end of the programme. They state outright that this is not a fault.Related: same brand
- E06Get it checkedThe pump is blocked by something that got into it, or the outlet hose was kinked when the machine was last moved. Both are owner jobs.Related: same brand
- E16Get it checkedThe door is not locked properly. Bosch’s US index groups this with E34, F16 and F34 as one fault, and washing caught in the seal is the usual reason.Related: same brand

Common questions about Bosch E19
Do I have E19 or E20, and does it matter?
BSH give both codes the same one-line meaning, so on their own documentation it does not change the answer. Neff, on their older system, split them into heating time exceeded for E19 and unexpected heating for E20 — the water never got hot versus the element ran when it should not have. Quote whichever your machine shows when you book, because it may narrow the diagnosis even where the published meaning does not.
Can I use the machine on cold cycles meanwhile?
Often yes, and it depends which of the two states you are in. Where the machine simply cannot heat, cold programmes usually complete and wash after a fashion. Where it stops mid cycle you have no usable programme at all. Neither is worth forcing repeatedly, because a heating circuit the machine has judged faulty is not something to keep switching on.
Why will BSH not give me anything to try?
Because there is nothing outside the cabinet to try. The element and its sensing sit in the bottom of the tub behind panels, on mains voltage, submerged. Compare their E06 and E29 pages, where they publish full procedures because the parts are reachable. The silence here is a real signal rather than a policy.
Is it worth repairing?
Usually, if the machine is otherwise sound. An element or a sensor is among the cheaper parts and most of the bill is the visit. It becomes a different question if the machine has already had a pump and a set of bearings, or if the quote comes back as a control board.
