Bosch E29 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The filters in the inlet or AquaStop hose connection are blocked. BSH publish the procedure, with one warning that matters if you have AquaStop.
Take care
What E29 means
E29 is the code that names the filters in the water connection of the inlet or AquaStop hose as blocked, and it is one of the few on this platform where BSH publish a full owner procedure rather than a phone number. It is also the code where they attach an explicit warning, and the warning is the reason to read this before you start unscrewing things. AquaStop is a Bosch and Siemens safety inlet hose with an electrically operated valve built into the connector at the tap end, there to shut the water off if the hose fails.
BSH state in terms that because the safety device contains an electric valve, it must not be immersed in water. That rules out the thing people instinctively do with a blocked filter, which is to drop the whole assembly in a bowl and leave it to soak. The blockage itself is undramatic. Mains water carries fine grit and rust, and the gauze screens in the hose connectors exist to catch it before it reaches the solenoid valve inside the machine.
Over several years in a hard water area they silt up until the machine cannot fill within its allowed time. BSH give E29 a second cause alongside the filters — water pressure too low — with a concrete test: about ten litres should come out of the fully open tap in a minute, and if less does, call a plumber. Note how this differs from the general fill code: E29 names the filters and the pressure, where E17 covers the tap, kinks, pressure, the filters and the level sensing together.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Filter at the tap end blocked | The first place BSH send you, and on an AquaStop hose the only filter you can reach, inside the bulky plastic connector at the tap. Grit and rust from the mains, caught exactly as intended. | Common |
| Filter at the machine end blocked | On standard and AquaSecure hoses only — BSH have you take the hose off the back of the machine and lift the filter out with pliers. AquaStop hoses are permanently fitted at that end. | Common |
| Water pressure too low | BSH’s second stated cause. Roughly 10 litres a minute from the fully open tap is their pass mark; Bosch’s manual asks for at least 8. Below that, a plumber rather than an engineer. | Occasional |
| Scale in the connector after a long install | Hard water leaves the screen furred rather than dirty. It rinses, but it is worth looking at the light through it rather than assuming. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Turn the tap off. Bosch’s manual adds a pressure-relief step before you undo anything: select any programme except Rinse, Spin or Empty, start it, let it run about 40 seconds, then switch off and pull out the plug.
BSH publish an explicit warning on this code: the AquaStop safety device contains an electric valve and must not be immersed in water. Do not put the tap-end assembly in a bowl to soak.Keep a bucket ready, disconnect the hose from the tap and pour the water left in the hose into the bucket. This is BSH’s order — tap end first.
Clean the filter in the tap-end connector with a small brush. Hold it up to the light: if you cannot see clear light through the mesh it is still blocked, however clean it looks.
If your machine does not have AquaStop — a plain nut at the machine end rather than a permanently fitted hose — also take the hose off the back of the machine, pull that filter out with a pair of pliers, and clean it too.
While the hose is off the tap, run the pressure test BSH give: a bucket under the fully open tap should collect about 10 litres in a minute. Much less than that and they say to call a plumber; no amount of filter cleaning will fix it.
Reconnect the hose by hand — Bosch say hand-tight only, tools damage the thread — turn the tap on and check both connections for leaks before you plug the machine back in.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Bosch E29
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
What it costs to fix

Free in most cases. An inlet solenoid valve is around £90 to £140 fitted; low mains pressure is a plumber’s job rather than an appliance repair.

Common questions about Bosch E29
Why must the AquaStop hose not be immersed?
Because there is an electric valve inside the housing at the tap end. BSH publish that as a warning on this code rather than as general advice, and Bosch’s manual puts it under "Risk of death". The valve is what shuts the water off if the hose bursts, it is wired back to the machine, and soaking it is how you lose the protection you paid for.
How do I know whether I have an AquaStop hose?
Look at the fitting at the tap end. A plain nut is an ordinary or AquaSecure hose. A bulky moulded box is AquaStop, and Bosch’s manual says on those models the hose is permanently installed at the machine end. Many Bosch machines are supplied with one and most owners have never had a reason to look.
Is this the same as the water supply code?
It is the same subsystem and a narrower cause. E17 covers the tap being off, the hose kinked, low mains pressure, the filters and the level sensing together. E29 names the filters in the inlet or AquaStop connection and the pressure specifically, which is why BSH publish a procedure for it rather than a list of things to check. Bosch’s US index runs E17, F17 and F29 together as one entry.
How often should the inlet filters be cleaned?
No manufacturer publishes an interval for it and we are not going to invent one. What is fair to say is that in a hard water area it is the sort of thing worth looking at when the machine is out for any other reason, because it takes five minutes with the tap off and it prevents this code rather than fixing it.
