A motor control fault. BSH publish five of these codes with one shared meaning and no owner remedy at all, which is itself the answer.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Bosch properly.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Bosch E50

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What E50 means

E50 is one of a block of codes BSH publish for the drive circuit and the motor control system, and the honest description of that block is that the manufacturer gives one line and a phone number for all of it. The codes are E47, E50, E51, E52 and E57, and the published meaning for each is the drive circuit or the motor control system, with no cause list and no owner steps.

Any table you find that assigns each of those five a distinct component has gone beyond what BSH publish. Understanding why they are grouped makes the silence less frustrating. A modern Bosch drum is turned by a brushless motor whose speed and direction are managed by a power electronics stage, and the board watches what the motor actually does against what it was told to do.

When those disagree, the fault could be the motor windings, the position sensing, the power stage, or the wiring between them, and the codes distinguish internal test failures that mean nothing outside a service environment. There is one thing worth separating out, because it is the same family and it does have a remedy: where BSH mean the drum is physically blocked by laundry, they publish a different code and they tell you to check the load. If you have that code, you have something to do. With this one you do not.

What causes it

Causes of the Bosch E50 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Motor control electronicsThe power stage that drives the motor. The likeliest reading of the code and a board-level repair rather than a part swap.Common
Motor or its position sensingWindings, or the sensor telling the board where the rotor is. Produces the same disagreement between commanded and actual behaviour.Occasional
Wiring between board and motorThe cheapest possible outcome and worth an engineer checking before a board is quoted. Connectors in that run sit close to a vibrating motor.Occasional

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£150–£320

A motor control module or motor is typically £150 to £320 fitted and is the point at which replacement becomes a real question. A wiring fault found on the same visit costs the call-out only.

Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Common questions about Bosch E50

I have E47 and not E50. Is this the right page?

Yes. BSH publish E47, E50, E51, E52 and E57 with the same one-line meaning — the drive circuit or the motor control system — and no separate causes or remedies for any of them. Quote the exact code you see when you book, because an engineer’s service documentation may distinguish them even though the consumer documentation does not.

Is it worth a power cycle?

Once, properly, at the socket rather than the panel. Motor control faults are sometimes latched after a genuine transient such as a jammed drum, and a full de-energisation clears the latch. If the code comes straight back, stop. BSH do not publish a reset for these and there is nothing to be gained from repeating one.

Why will BSH not tell me what the part is?

Because from outside the machine it is not determinable, and they publish remedies where remedies exist. On the same platform they give a full procedure for a blocked pump and a full procedure for blocked inlet filters. The absence of one here reflects a fault that needs a meter on a motor rather than editorial reticence.

How much should I expect this to cost?

Get it itemised before you agree, because the range is wide. A connector found on the visit is a call-out. A motor or a control module is a substantial part, and on a machine past about eight years old the quote is often the moment to weigh a repair against a new machine with a warranty.
