What F05 means
Hotpoint describe F05 as a waste pipe blockage or pump issue, and the symptom they list alongside it is the one that brings people to the page: the door will not open, or it opens and the water is still sitting in the drum. The machine will not release the door while there is water above the glass, which is a deliberate safety measure rather than the fault getting worse. What matters about F05 is that Hotpoint give real instructions rather than routing you to an engineer. Their advice names three places to look: the pump filter, the waste water hose, and any under-sink plumbing. That last one catches people out. A washing machine sharing a waste connection with a kitchen sink is downstream of everything that goes into that sink, and a trap thick with grease will back the machine up even though nothing inside the machine is wrong at all. If the sink has been draining slowly, that is where to start.

What to try yourself
Switch off at the wall and unplug. Get towels down first — there can be twenty litres in there and it all has to come out before you can do anything else.
Open the flap at the bottom front and find the filter. If there is a small drain hose beside it, use that to empty the machine into a shallow tray before you unscrew anything.
After a hot wash that water can scald. If the machine stopped part way through a 60 degree cycle, give it an hour to cool before you start.Unscrew the filter and clear it. Then put a hand into the housing and check the impeller turns freely — something small and hard often gets past the filter and jams the pump itself.
Refit the filter firmly, then pull the machine out and check the waste hose along its length for kinks or crushing.
Check the sink. If the machine shares a waste with the kitchen sink and that sink drains slowly, clear the trap before you conclude the machine is at fault. Hotpoint name under-sink plumbing in their own advice for a reason.

The door will not open and it is full of water. How do I get my washing out?
Drain it first through the emergency hose behind the filter flap, into a shallow tray. The lock will normally release once the water is below the level of the glass. Do not try to force the door — you will break the catch and turn one repair into two.
Is F05 the same on an Indesit?
