Miele F252 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Usually simple to fixWashing machinePublished on miele.co.uk as a dedicated fault page.Last updated

The door contacts near the hinge are dirty. Miele tell you to clean them, and only to call if that does not do it.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the washing machine.

What F252 means

F252 is one of Miele’s smaller owner-fixable codes and a good example of the value of their documentation, because without it this would be an inscrutable fault. Their stated cause is that the door contacts in the area of the door hinge are dirty, and their remedy is to clean them, contacting Service only if it persists.

What is happening is that the machine confirms the door is properly shut through electrical contacts rather than a mechanical catch alone, and those contacts sit near the hinge where they collect the same film of detergent residue, fabric conditioner and lint that coats everything else in a washing machine. A dirty contact makes an intermittent connection, and an intermittent connection reads to the control board as a door that keeps opening and closing.

The practical note is to clean gently and dry. These are electrical contacts on a machine you have just unplugged, so a dry cloth or a barely damp one is right, and anything abrasive is not — the plating on a contact is thin, and scouring it off makes the problem permanent. If cleaning them fixes it for a fortnight and then it returns, mention that pattern to the engineer, because a contact that dirties that fast usually means water is getting somewhere it should not.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F252 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Detergent and conditioner residue on the contactsMiele’s own stated cause. The same film that coats the door seal collects on the contacts near the hinge.Common
Lint bridging the contactsFine fibres collect in the same recess and make the connection intermittent.Occasional
Contact corroded or wornWhat remains if cleaning does not hold. Miele say to contact Service if it persists.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it before touching any contacts.

  2. Open the door fully and find the contacts in the recess near the hinge side.

  3. Wipe them with a dry or barely damp cloth. Miele’s instruction is simply to clean them.

Nothing abrasive and no scouring pad. The plating on a contact is very thin and taking it off turns an intermittent fault into a permanent one.
  4. Let everything dry completely before plugging back in, then run a short cycle to test.

  5. If it comes back within a few weeks, book an engineer and tell them how quickly it returned. That pattern points at water reaching somewhere it should not.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F252

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
