Miele F34 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedWashing machineShown as F34 on segment displays and as "Door lock" or "The door will not lock" on text displays. On top loaders Miele say it can also mean the drum could not be locked.Last updated

The door could not be locked. Miele’s manual says close the door again and restart; their website adds an overloaded drum and a two-minute power-off. Try those before calling.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Miele properly.

What F34 means

F34 reads as a service-only fault from its title alone, and it usually is not. On miele.co.uk the page is headed "Fault F34, Door lock, call Customer Service" — or on text displays "The door will not lock. Call Customer Service" — and explained as the door not being able to lock, or the drum not locking on a top loader.

But the same page then gives two causes with owner remedies. The first is that the drum has been overloaded: observe the maximum load size in the operating instructions, then switch the appliance off and back on again. The second is a technical fault, for which Miele prescribe their standard cure — disconnect from the electricity supply at the wall or the fuse, wait at least two minutes, switch on again, and contact Customer Service only if it persists. Miele’s operating instructions for segment-display machines add a third and simpler reading of the same code, printed as F alternating with 34: "The door is not closed properly. The door lock could not engage", remedy close the door again and start the programme again.

Between them those three cover most of what actually happens. Something across the latch face — a corner of a duvet cover or a sleeve — stops the lock engaging; a drum stuffed past its rated load presses the washing against the door so it cannot latch; and a control that has got itself confused is cleared by the two-minute disconnect. If none of that clears it, the interlock itself is the likely fault and the title of the page becomes the right advice.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F34 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Door not closed properlyThe operating instructions’ stated cause: the door lock could not engage. A sleeve or a corner of a duvet cover across the latch is enough.Common
Drum overloadedMiele’s first cause on the website. Observe the maximum load in the operating instructions, then switch off and on again.Common
Technical fault, including a failed interlockMiele’s second cause on the website, with a two-minute disconnect as the remedy and Customer Service if it persists.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Open the door fully and run a hand right round the seal, checking nothing is caught across the latch face.

  2. Close it firmly until it latches positively rather than pushing it to.

  3. Start the programme again. This is the operating instructions’ remedy and it clears the great majority of cases.

  4. If the drum is packed, take some washing out. Miele’s website names an overloaded drum as a cause: observe the maximum load in your operating instructions, then switch the machine off and on again.

  5. Still showing? Do Miele’s two-minute disconnect: switch off at the wall and pull the plug (or turn off the fuse), wait at least two minutes, switch on and try again. If it persists after that, book Miele — the interlock is the likely fault.

Do not force a door that will not open. Interlocks are designed to fail locked, and forcing one damages the latch as well as the door.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F34

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
