Miele F92 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
Mould. Miele are telling you that months of cool washes have grown bacterial colonies, and the remedy is a maintenance wash.

What F92 means
F92 is Miele saying something most manufacturers only hint at. Their published explanation is that if nothing but low-temperature programmes are operated over a long period, bacterial colonies in the form of mould can develop in the washing machine.
The remedy is to run the Maintenance wash programme, or a Cottons wash at maximum temperature, before the next load. It is worth understanding why this happens rather than just running the cycle, because otherwise it comes back. Modern detergents and modern machines are both very good at washing at thirty degrees, and thirty degrees is not hot enough to kill anything or to melt the fatty residues that build up in the door seal, the detergent drawer and the sump. Over a year of exclusively cool washes those residues become a film, and the film becomes a habitat.
The smell people describe as a drain smell is usually this. A maintenance wash at ninety fixes the current state; not getting it back means running one every month or two, leaving the door and the drawer open between washes so the machine can dry, and occasionally using a powder detergent, which contains bleach that liquid and capsule detergents do not.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Only low-temperature programmes used | Miele’s own stated cause. Thirty degree washes never get hot enough to clear fatty residues. | Common |
| Liquid or capsule detergent only | Powders contain a bleaching agent that liquids do not. An all-liquid regime removes that defence. | Common |
| Door and drawer kept closed between washes | A sealed damp drum never dries. Leaving both open between loads is the simplest prevention there is. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Run the Maintenance wash programme on an empty drum, or a Cottons wash at maximum temperature if your machine has no Maintenance wash. Miele’s own remedy.
Before you start it, pull back the door seal all the way round and wipe out the fold at the bottom. That is where the worst of it collects and a hot cycle will not reach it.
Take the detergent drawer right out, wash it in hot water, and clean the recess it sits in.
Leave the door and the drawer ajar between washes from now on, so the drum dries out.
Run a hot maintenance wash every month or two, and use a powder detergent occasionally for the bleaching agent it contains.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F92
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
