The machine is being fed hot water when it expects cold. Almost always the fill hose is on the wrong tap, and it is a plumbing fix rather than a fault.

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the washing machine.

What 4E1 means

This is one of the more satisfying codes to look up, because the answer is nearly always simple and the machine is not broken. Samsung group 4E1 with 4C2, 4E2 and 4Ed as a water temperature issue, and their published remedy is a single line: check that your water hose is connected to a cold supply and not a hot supply. A modern washing machine heats its own water and expects to be fed cold. Give it hot and several things go wrong at once. The machine cannot run a cold or delicate programme at all, because it has no way of cooling water down. Enzymes in biological detergent are destroyed by hot water at the fill stage, so washing comes out visibly less clean. And on a coloured wash you can set dye running. So the code is doing you a favour rather than being obstructive. It usually appears after a kitchen has been refitted, a machine has been moved, or somebody has connected a machine to whichever tap was nearest without checking which was which.

What to try yourself

  1. Look at the tap the machine is connected to. Cold taps and cold valves are normally marked blue; hot are red. If yours is on red, that is your answer.

  2. Do not trust the colour alone. Turn the tap off, unscrew the hose into a bucket, run the tap for thirty seconds and feel the water. Kitchen plumbing is reversed more often than anyone would like.

    If it does run hot, be careful — a hot supply at a kitchen tap can be well above 55°C and will scald.
  3. Move the hose to the genuinely cold supply. If there is no cold connection under the counter, that is a plumbing job, but a small one.

  4. Run a short cold cycle to confirm the code has gone, and reconnect finger tight plus a quarter turn rather than forcing it.

Common questions about Samsung 4E1

Is it damaging the machine to run it on hot?

It is not going to destroy it, but it stops the machine controlling temperature at all, ruins the performance of biological detergent, and can set dye running on coloureds. The machine flags it because the results are bad, not because it is about to break.

Some older machines had a hot fill. Why not this one?

Hot fill made sense when a tank of hot water was already sitting there and washes ran at higher temperatures. Modern machines use much less water, wash cooler, and heat precisely what they need, so drawing a drum of tank water is both slower and less efficient. Cold fill only is now standard.

The hose is definitely on cold. What then?

Then you are into the rare version, where the temperature sensor is misreading. Book an engineer, and tell them you have already proven the supply is cold at the tap — it will save them repeating the check.
