Samsung HOT status codewhat it means
Not a fault. The machine is too hot to open safely, so it is running its fan and holding the door shut until the inside drops to 55°C.

What HOT means
HOT is one of the few things a washing machine displays that is genuinely good news. Samsung publish it as "appliance is too hot", and their remedy is to wait: the fan runs until the interior has cooled to 55°C, at which point the door unlocks on its own. It appears on washer dryers and on machines with a steam or high-temperature cycle, because those are the ones that can end a programme with the drum hotter than a hand can tolerate. Nothing has failed, nothing needs resetting, and there is no part to buy.
The reason it deserves explaining rather than dismissing is that the symptom — a finished cycle, a locked door, a word on the display — is identical to the symptom of a broken interlock, and people force doors.
Samsung document the same 55°C threshold elsewhere: their AddWash hatch will not open when the water is above 55°C, during drying, while the drum is turning, at any point in an ECO drum clean cycle, or when the child lock is set. So if a hatch or a door is refusing you and the machine is warm, the temperature rule is the first thing to rule out.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| A hot or steam cycle has just finished | The intended behaviour. A 90°C cotton wash or a steam programme leaves the drum well above the threshold and the machine simply will not release the door until it has cooled. | Common |
| A drying cycle on a washer dryer | Drying ends hotter than washing does, and these machines add a cool-down phase for exactly this reason. Interrupting a dry part-way through is the usual way to meet the message. | Common |
| The machine is boxed in with no airflow | The fan needs somewhere to push warm air. An integrated housing with no gap, or a machine pressed against a radiator, makes the wait noticeably longer. | Occasional |
| A cooling fan that is not running | Rare, and the tell is duration. Cooling should take minutes, not an hour. If the message never clears the fan or the temperature sensor is worth checking. | Rare |
What to try yourself
Leave it alone and let it finish. Samsung’s instruction is that the fan runs until the interior reaches 55°C and then the door unlocks by itself. On most machines this is a matter of minutes.
Do not force the door and do not pull the emergency release. The door is being held for the same reason an oven door locks during a pyrolytic clean, and there is water and steam behind it at a temperature that will scald.
Water above 55°C causes serious scalds. This is one of the few times a locked washing machine door is protecting you rather than inconveniencing you.Give the fan somewhere to breathe. If the machine sits in a tight housing, open the cupboard door. If it is next to a radiator that is on, turn the radiator down.
If the message is still showing after an hour, switch off at the wall for a minute and switch back on. If it returns immediately on a cold machine, the temperature reading rather than the temperature is the problem, and that is worth booking in.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung HOT
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Nothing. This is documented normal behaviour and clears itself. A cooling fan or temperature sensor only enters the picture if the message never goes away on a cold machine.

Common questions about Samsung HOT
How long does HOT last?
Usually a few minutes to around twenty, depending on how hot the cycle ran and how much air the machine can move. It clears on its own the moment the inside reaches 55°C. If it is still showing after an hour on a machine that feels cool, something is wrong with the reading rather than the temperature.
Can I use the emergency door release to get my washing out?
You can, but this is the one situation where you should not. The release exists for a machine full of cold water and a dead interlock. Using it on a machine that is telling you it is above 55°C means opening a door with scalding water and steam behind it.
My AddWash hatch will not open and there is no code showing. Same thing?
Very likely. Samsung publish the conditions that keep the AddWash hatch shut, and water above 55°C is the first of them. The others are during drying, while the drum is rotating, at any point in an ECO drum clean cycle, when the child lock is on, and on a drum wash or drum drying programme.
Is there anything I should do differently next time?
Only that a hot or steam cycle needs a few minutes at the end before you can unload it, so it is worth not running one when you need the machine emptied in a hurry. Leaving the door ajar afterwards helps the drum dry out and does no harm.
