What 8E means
Samsung describe 8E as a current error. The machine monitors the current its motor and control electronics are drawing, and when the measurement falls outside the expected window it shuts the cycle down rather than continuing. Samsung give the same first step as for several of their codes: switch off at the mains, wait a minute, switch back on and start a new programme. That is worth doing once, because a brief supply disturbance can latch this code on hardware that is entirely healthy.
Where it needs treating more seriously is when it comes straight back, or when it arrives alongside anything you can smell. A current fault is by definition an electrical one, and the components involved carry mains voltage and can hold a charge after the machine is unplugged. This is not a filter-and-hose code. Samsung list several related power conditions separately — 9C1 and 9C2 for low voltage, 9E1 and 9E2 for power errors, and UC for supply voltage fluctuation — and if you are seeing more than one of these it is worth considering the socket and the circuit as well as the machine.

What to try yourself
Switch off at the wall, wait a full minute, then switch back on and start a new programme. This is Samsung’s own first step and it does clear a transient reading. Do it once, not repeatedly.
Stop and use your nose before trying anything else. Any smell of burning, hot plastic or scorching means stop entirely, switch off at the wall, unplug, and do not run it again.
A burning smell from an appliance is never a code to reset and retry. Leave it unplugged and get someone to look at it.Check the machine is plugged directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or a multi-way adaptor. Samsung call this out specifically, and a washing machine on an extension lead is a genuinely poor idea for reasons beyond this code.
If the code returns on the next cycle, stop using the machine and book an engineer. Tell them it is a current error and mention any other power codes you have seen, because that pattern is useful to them.

Is it dangerous to keep trying?
One power cycle is what Samsung recommend and is fine. Repeatedly restarting a machine that keeps reporting a current fault is not, because you are overriding a protective measurement each time. If there is any smell of burning, stop immediately and leave it unplugged.
Could it be the socket rather than the machine?
It can be. Samsung list low voltage and supply fluctuation as separate codes and specifically advise against extension leads. If other appliances on the same circuit misbehave, or the machine is on a multi-way adaptor, that is worth resolving first.
Is this repair worth doing?
Get the diagnosis before deciding. A connector or a wiring repair is modest. An inverter board on a machine approaching a decade old often costs enough that a replacement machine, with a warranty, is the better spend.
Some sources say 8E is a vibration sensor rather than a current fault. Which is right?
Samsung publish both, in different places. Samsung UK list 8E as a current error, which is what this page follows. Samsung’s support pages for the Americas list 8E as a MEMS or vibration sensor error, while Samsung UK give 8C separately for the MEMS sensor. That is a genuine conflict between two manufacturer sources rather than a repair site getting it wrong, so quote the code exactly as your machine shows it and do not let anyone fit a part on the strength of the code alone.
