Toshiba air conditioner fault codes
Read the code before you touch the power. Toshiba’s technical handbook carries an explicit instruction not to switch the supply off before reading the fault codes, because doing so clears the diagnostic memory; their current domestic service manual says the codes now survive a power cycle. You will not know which your unit does until it is too late, so on this brand the universal first move waits until the code is written down.
Where the code shows on a Toshiba
A domestic Toshiba fault comes as a pair, not a single code: an initial code of 01, 02 or 03, and then a detail code. Both are needed. Which lamp flashes, and how fast, identifies the group — the indoor board, the connecting cable and serial signal, the outdoor board, or others including the compressor — and the detail comes out through the wireless remote’s service mode. On the current range the CHECK button is on the back of the remote under the battery cover; pressing it shows 00, the temperature buttons step through the codes, the indoor unit gives a single beep for a code that does not apply and beeps for ten seconds with every lamp flashing when you reach the one that does. The handbook’s older procedure uses CHK and the TIMER buttons to the same end. Note that the green light flashing once per second at power-up is not a fault, and that 7F is not a fault either — it is what the controller sends to clear a code.
How to reset a Toshiba
Toshiba publish a clear procedure, and the order matters. Enter service mode on the wireless remote — CHK on the older controllers, the CHECK button under the battery cover on the current ones — step through the codes with the TIMER or temperature buttons until all the lights flash with the buzzer, and compare what is displayed against the code table. Press CLR to clear the fault, which sends 7F to the indoor unit, then leave service mode. Do all of that before the power is removed. Toshiba’s technical handbook warns that turning off the supply first clears the diagnostic memory; their current domestic service manual says a power cycle resets the unit to normal operation but does not delete the codes, and only CLR does. Read first either way, and it costs nothing. Toshiba also warn that high voltages are present if access covers are removed, and their owner’s manual says to turn the circuit breaker off before any cleaning.
