The boiler is not seeing enough water flow through it to run safely, so it has stopped. Usually a pump, an air lock, or a blocked filter.

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Ideal properly.

First cold day after the heating had been off all summer

A seized pump. Rotors stick after months idle and the first call for heat finds it.

An engineer can often free it, but a pump that has seized once will seize again.

Right after plumbing work or a radiator change

Air lock. The system was refilled but not vented properly.

Call whoever did the work back — this is finishing their job.

Radiators have been cold at the bottom for a while

Sludge is restricting flow through the whole system, and the filter is probably full.

Ask for the filter to be cleaned and the system water tested. Replacing a pump into a dirty system just kills the new pump.

What L1 means

L1 is a circulation fault. Ideal boilers compare the flow and return temperatures to work out whether water is actually moving through the heat exchanger. When the difference between them grows too large too quickly, the only explanation is that very little water is passing through, and the boiler stops before the exchanger overheats. System pressure can be perfectly normal when this happens — there is water in the system, it simply is not circulating. The usual causes are a pump that has failed or seized, air trapped in the primary circuit after work on the system, or a filter that has never been cleaned finally restricting flow completely.

What to try yourself

  1. Check the pressure gauge is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar cold. If it is, pressure is not your problem and this is genuinely a flow fault.

  2. Open every thermostatic radiator valve fully and make sure at least one radiator has no TRV at all, or has its lockshield open. The system needs somewhere for water to go.

  3. Feel the pipework below the boiler when it tries to start. If nothing warms and you hear no circulation, the pump is the prime suspect.

  4. Reset once. If L1 comes back within the same cycle, stop and book an engineer.

    Do not keep restarting a boiler that is not circulating. That is the exact condition that damages heat exchangers.

Common questions about Ideal L1

The pressure is fine, so why is it complaining about flow?

They measure different things. Pressure confirms there is water in the system. L1 says that water is not moving through the boiler. A well-pressurised system with a dead pump gives exactly this fault.

Could closing radiator valves have caused it?

Yes. If every thermostatic valve in the house closes at once, the pump has nowhere to push water. Most systems are designed with one radiator left permanently open — usually the bathroom towel rail — for exactly this reason.

What does it cost to fix?

A pump is £280 to £450 fitted. Clearing an air lock is usually within a standard call-out. A full system clean, if the sludge is bad enough, is £400 to £700.
