Ideal PCB Replacedwhat it means

Usually simple to fixBoilerVogue (2013–2017), Vogue Gen2 and Vogue MaxLast updated

Not a fault. A Vogue shows PCB Replaced once a new primary board has been fitted and programmed, and Ideal's whole instruction for it is to restart the boiler by pressing RESTART.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the boiler.

What this means

On a Vogue Gen2 or Vogue Max a new primary PCB arrives blank and is taught what it is driving on screen: the engineer answers Initialise PCB?, switches the mains off and on when told, steps through a list of fourteen boiler models and gas types with NEXT, presses SELECT and confirms Program this model?, and the board resets into installer set-up. PCB Replaced is the confirmation screen at the end of that road. It appears in Ideal's fault-finding menu with a single remedy, "Restart boiler by pressing RESTART", and the 2014 Vogue printed the same thing with its physical button: "Reset boiler by pressing r".

You would normally only meet it with an engineer still in the room, or if they left without pressing the key. What Ideal do not publish is any meaning for the message when no board has been changed, so if that is your situation, treat it as the board or the screen misbehaving and ask the installer rather than reading anything more into it.

What causes it

Causes of Ideal PCB Replaced, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
A new primary PCB has just been programmedThe expected case. The board has finished its model and gas selection and is waiting for a restart before it will run.Common
Engineer left before restartingThe programming completes, the screen sits on PCB Replaced, and the first person to notice is the householder when the heating does not come on. One press of RESTART finishes the job.Occasional
Message with no recent board workIdeal give no cause for this, and this page will not invent one. If nobody has had the casing off, it points at the primary board or the user interface and is a call to the installer.Rare

What to try yourself

  1. Press RESTART under the screen — or the r button on a 2013–2017 Vogue. The boiler should return to its normal display and answer the next call for heat.

  2. If it goes straight back to PCB Replaced, or if you have not had a board changed, do not keep pressing. Ring the installer who did the work, or Ideal if the boiler is in warranty.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Ideal boiler

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

Nothing: pressing RESTART is the cure. If the message will not clear, the visit belongs to whoever fitted the board and should not be charged; an unrelated call-out is £80–£120.

Common questions

Has the engineer done something wrong?

Almost certainly not. The message is the last screen of a successful PCB replacement and a restart is all it wants. It is the Vogue saying the programming is complete, not that anything is amiss.

Why does a new board need programming at all?

One spare PCB serves fourteen Vogue variants, and the board sets its fan speeds and gas rate from the model it is told it is in. Ideal print in capitals that entering the correct boiler size and fuel type is critical for safe operation, which is why this is an installer's screen and not a householder's.

My 2015 Vogue says PCB Replaced Incorrectly. Is that this?

No. That is a different message, and it means the Boiler Chip Card on the new board is missing or wrong. The first Vogue used a physical chip card where the Gen2 and Max use the on-screen menu; it has its own page here.
