Vaillant F.53 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

The gas is not flowing through the valve the way the boiler expects. Vaillant's list runs from low gas pressure to a wet or blocked filter under the venturi cap.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.53

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.53 means

F.53 is an ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5 code, and one of the few where Vaillant's installer table and their consumer page describe the same thing from two directions. The installation and maintenance instructions call it "gas valve assembly mass flow unexpected — the mass flow through the gas valve assembly is not as expected" and give the engineer a check list that is all about gas getting to the burner: gas flow pressure too low, a sharp drop in pressure during ignition or at full load, the filter below the venturi filter cap wet or blocked, the internal pressure measuring point in the venturi blocked, or a gas valve that does not regulate correctly.

Vaillant's UK fault-code page files it under "combustion regulation fault" and adds an incorrect coding resistor on natural gas and a defective mass flow sensor. The venturi filter is the detail engineers remember, because the small gauze under the cap can become wet when condensate finds its way back and the code then appears on cold mornings.

The consumer page also gives the householder three checks before ringing, which are reproduced below. The pro, exclusive, ecoFIT, ecoTEC sustain and 2022 CS/1-5 tables do not list F.53; on the exclusive the combustion-sensing faults have rows of their own at F.55, F.56 and F.57.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.53 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Gas supply pressure low or collapsing on demandVaillant's first two items: pressure too low, or a sharp drop during ignition or full load. Other appliances running, a meter regulator fault or an undersized supply pipe all produce it.Common
Venturi filter wet or blockedThe gauze under the venturi filter cap has become wet or clogged, so the mass flow the board measures no longer matches what the valve is passing. Vaillant's warning not to lubricate the venturi O-ring belongs to this repair.Common
Pressure measuring point in the venturi blockedThe internal tapping the board reads from is obstructed. Cleared during the same venturi inspection.Occasional
Gas valve not regulating, or wrong coding resistorVaillant's remaining causes: a valve that no longer tracks the demand, or a natural gas boiler carrying the wrong coding resistor. The valve is the costly outcome.Occasional

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£90–£380

Time on site

1 hour

Cleaning or replacing the venturi filter is £90 to £160. A gas valve assembly is £280 to £380 fitted. Supply pressure problems may be the gas network's to fix at no charge.

Common questions about Vaillant F.53

Why does F.53 appear on cold mornings and clear later?

A venturi filter that has become damp behaves worst when the boiler is cold and the gas dense; as things warm the flow reading drifts back into range. It is a sign the filter needs cleaning or replacing, not a cure.

Is this dangerous?

The boiler has stopped because its gas flow reading is wrong, which is the protection doing its job. It is not a gas leak. If you ever smell gas, turn off at the meter and call 0800 111 999 before anything else.

My boiler is an ecoTEC pro or exclusive. Can it show F.53?

Not according to their tables. F.53 belongs to the ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5, including its storage-combi versions. If a different model shows it, an engineer will check the code against that boiler's own instructions.
