Vaillant F.88 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerecoFIT pure and sustain, ecoTEC sustain and the open-vent ecoTEC plus; ecoTEC plus CS/1-5 as F.088. Not in the ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5, pro, exclusive, 48–64 kW or older tables.Last updated

The board cannot see the gas valve. Vaillant print F.88 as the valve not connected or connected incorrectly, or a harness fault, and the boiler will not run until the circuit is proved.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.88

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.88 means

F.88 is the gas valve's connection check, the second of the three codes the ecoFIT and ecoTEC sustain boards raise before they try to run. The ecoFIT pure and ecoFIT sustain print "fault: gas valve assembly — gas valve assembly not connected or connected incorrectly, short circuit in the cable harness"; the ecoTEC sustain has an interruption in the harness where the ecoFIT has a short; the open-vent ecoTEC plus titles the row "gas valve not connected" and works outward from the valve plug to the board's multiple plug, the harness and the electronics.

The 2022 CS/1-5 gives it as F.088, "the electrical connection to the gas valve has been interrupted", and Vaillant's UK fault-code page uses the same sentence, listing the valve connected incorrectly and a short in the harness as the causes and routing it straight to an engineer. It is worth being clear about what F.88 is not.

It is not a gas leak, a valve stuck open or a valve that will not open on demand — those are F.27, F.62 and F.26 on the ranges that have them. F.88 is the board finding no valve on the end of its wires. Nothing has been admitted, nothing has lit, and the repair is electrical. It is not a row on the ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5, pro or exclusive.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.88 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Gas valve plug not connected or looseThe connector on the valve body heads the open-vent and CS/1-5 lists. It is dislodged when the gas train is worked on and left short of home.Common
Board-end connector half inThe open-vent table names the multiple plug on the PCB. A board or display swap is when it gets left half in.Common
Harness shorted, or interruptedTwo ranges, two failure modes for one lead: the ecoFIT names a short, the sustain a break. Either way the valve is electrically absent.Occasional
Electronics defectiveThe valve driver stage on the board, which the open-vent table lists last. Suspected only when a valve that is plainly connected still reads absent.Rare

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£80–£380

Time on site

45 minutes

A plug or harness repair is a call-out of £80 to £150. A gas valve assembly, if the valve's own connector has failed, is £280 to £380 fitted.

Common questions about Vaillant F.88

Is gas escaping?

No. F.88 means the board has no electrical connection to the valve, so the valve has not been told to open. If you smell gas at any time, that is unrelated to this code: turn off at the meter and call 0800 111 999.

Should I reset it?

Once, with a one-second press of the fault clearance key on an ecoFIT, or a press of longer than three seconds on an ecoTEC sustain or CS/1-5. If the code returns, the circuit is open and only an engineer can trace it.

Will I need a new gas valve?

Rarely. Every version of Vaillant's row puts the plug and the harness first, and a valve that is electrically absent is usually a valve that is unplugged. The valve itself is the last suspect.
