What F.61 means

F.61 is a gas valve control fault. Vaillant attribute it to a short circuit or earth leak in the cable harness running to the gas valves, a defective gas valve assembly with an earth leak from its coils, or a defective control board. Note that all three are electrical rather than mechanical — the code is about the circuit that operates the valve, not about gas flow. That distinction is useful because it means the fault is diagnosable with a multimeter before anyone commits to an expensive part. A gas valve is one of the dearer components on a domestic boiler, and an earth leak in a chafed cable harness produces an identical code for a fraction of the cost. A competent engineer will therefore test the harness and the coil resistances before ordering anything. There is nothing a householder can do here beyond confirming the fault and calling someone: everything involved sits inside the casing of a gas appliance.

Common questions about Vaillant F.61

Is it safe to leave the boiler switched on while I wait?

The appliance has locked itself out and will not fire, so it is not doing anything unsafe. That said, if it is going to sit unused for more than a day or two there is no reason not to switch it off at the spur.

How do I avoid paying for a gas valve I did not need?

Ask the engineer whether they have tested the cable harness and the valve coil resistances before ordering. Vaillant list the harness as a cause in its own right, so it is a reasonable question and a good engineer will not mind being asked.

Is F.61 the same as F.62?

No. F.61 is a fault in the circuit that controls the valve. F.62 is a delay in the valve actually shutting off — the flame lingering after it should have gone out. Related components, different faults, and F.62 has a safety dimension that F.61 does not.
