Vaillant F.60 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerecoMAX 600 and 800 series (2000–2005) and the ecoTEC of the 2004 servicing instructions only, as "gas-valve control + defective"; turboMAX plus and thermoCOMPACT ../2 E (1999–2005) as "electronic fault". Not printed in the ecoTEC tables from the 2005 edition onward, nor in any ecoTEC plus, pro, exclusive, ecoFIT, ecoTEC sustain or CS/1-5 table.Last updated

On an ecoMAX or the first 2004 ecoTEC, the positive side of the gas valve control has faulted — loom, valve coils or board. On a turboMAX plus, F.60 is simply "electronic fault".

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.60

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.60 means

F.60 is a code with two lives. In the ecoMAX 600 and 800 series manual, and in the very first 2004 edition of the ecoTEC servicing instructions, it is "gas-valve control + defective", printed as a pair with F.61 "gas-valve control – defective", and both rows carry the same cause list: "short circuit/earth (ground) leak in cable loom to gas valves, gas valve assembly defective (earth/ground leak from coils), electronic control system defective".

The board drives the gas valve's coils through two monitored lines, and the plus and minus codes tell an engineer which line has failed its check. From the 2005 edition onward Vaillant dropped F.60 and kept a single F.61, "gas-valve control defective", which is the row every later ecoTEC prints, so an ecoTEC showing F.60 is one of the earliest boilers of the range.

On the turboMAX plus and the thermoCOMPACT ../2 E, which share a manual, F.60 is listed only as "electronic fault — electronics defect", one of four such rows (F.60, F.61, F.67 and, differently worded, F.63) that all end at the printed circuit board. Whichever boiler you have, the boiler has stopped because it cannot trust its own control of the gas valve, and that is a gas-carrying part inside the case. There is no householder step beyond one reset, and the age of every boiler that prints this code — twenty years at the youngest — is part of the repair conversation.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.60 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Earth leak or short in the gas valve loomVaillant's first cause. Insulation chafed where the loom passes the combustion chamber, or a plug wet from a leak, lets one of the two control lines read wrong.Common
Gas valve coils shorted to earthThe second cause on the ecoMAX and 2004 ecoTEC: the solenoid windings inside the valve assembly have broken down to the valve body.Occasional
Control board faultThe third cause on the condensing ranges and the only one the turboMAX plus prints. On a boiler this old the board is often obsolete.Occasional
