Vaillant F.66 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerturboMAX plus 824, 828 and 837 E and thermoCOMPACT 615 to 637 ../2 E (1999–2005) only. Printed in no ecoMAX or ecoTEC table; the equivalent on later ranges is the "con" communication code.Last updated

A turboMAX plus and thermoCOMPACT ../2 E code only: the multifunction display has faulted, or lost its connection to the board. The boiler may still be running normally behind it.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.66 means

F.66 is printed only in the turboMAX plus and thermoCOMPACT ../2 E installation and servicing instructions: "display fault — display defect; fault in the connection to the display; electronics defect". Those boilers were the first Vaillants in Britain with what the operating instructions call an "advanced multifunction boiler display", a small digital panel that showed the flow temperature, the status and fault codes, and it is that panel, or the ribbon cable and plug that join it to the main board, that F.66 is about.

It is unusual among fault codes in that the thing it reports is the thing it is shown on: a display bad enough to fail entirely shows nothing, so F.66 tends to appear on a panel that is still half-working — segments missing, flickering, or dropping out when the case is tapped — which is a fair description of a poor connection.

The boiler's heating and hot water may be entirely unaffected, or it may have stopped because the board treats the loss of its display as a fault; the manual does not say which. Nothing later carries the code: the ecoMAX and every ecoTEC report a display or user-interface problem through the communication codes, "con" and F.707 on the current ranges. On a boiler of this age the display and the board it plugs into are the two parts, and neither is a householder item.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.66 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Display plug or ribbon cable looseVaillant's middle cause, and the one that fits a flickering or partly blank display. Twenty years of thermal cycling behind a warm case works connectors loose.Common
Display module failedThe first listed cause. Segments dead or the whole panel dark while the boiler carries on.Occasional
Main board faultThe third cause: the board side of the display connection, or the electronics that drive it.Occasional

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.
