What F52 means
Miele word F52 precisely: an excess quantity of detergent or rinse aid has been dispensed, a sensor has detected too much foam inside the appliance, and the wash programme has been interrupted. Note what that says. The machine has not failed, it has not detected a leak, and no component is at fault. It has noticed conditions it cannot wash properly in and stopped rather than continuing.
Foam is a genuine operational problem in a dishwasher rather than a cosmetic one. Water cleans dishes by hitting them with force, and a tub full of suds cushions the spray and starves the circulation pump, which begins drawing air instead of water.
Left alone, heavy foaming can also push over the top of the tub and reach the base of the machine, where it will trigger the Waterproof System and turn a free problem into a service call. The overwhelmingly common cause is washing-up liquid finding its way into the machine, either in the dispenser or on items that went in still covered in it. Dishwasher detergent is specifically formulated not to foam; hand dishwashing liquid is formulated to do nothing else.

What to try yourself
Open the door and look. If there is visible foam, the diagnosis is confirmed and nothing is wrong with the machine.
Clear the message Miele’s way: on a machine with a programme selector, turn it to Stop/End; on a machine with touch controls, press and hold Start/Stop for around 5 seconds. Then switch the appliance off and back on again.
Scoop out as much foam as you can, then run a rinse programme with no detergent at all to flush the rest through. You may need to repeat that two or three times — suds are persistent and a single rinse often leaves enough behind to trigger it again.
Check the detergent dispenser for washing-up liquid, and check the rinse aid dispenser is not overfilled or weeping. If you use tablets that already contain rinse aid, Miele say to select the Combi tab function where the machine has one, and not to use tablets with the Quick wash 40 °C programme.
Rinse anything that has been soaking in soapy water before it goes in. This is the cause people overlook because nothing was ever put in the dispenser.

Have I damaged the machine?
No. Miele describe this as a sensor detecting foam and the programme being interrupted, which is the machine looking after itself. Clear the suds and carry on.
Someone put washing-up liquid in it. How bad is that?
Annoying rather than serious, and very common. Rinse it through with empty programmes until the foam stops appearing. The thing to avoid is running repeated full cycles while it is still foaming, because heavy foam can escape the tub and reach the base, which trips the Waterproof System and needs an engineer.
Can I use washing-up liquid if I run out of tablets?
No. It is the single most common way to end up on this page, and in a bad case it produces a flood across the kitchen floor rather than just a stopped programme.
