Miele dishwashers fault codes

Miele dishwashers show faults as an F followed by a number, and Miele split them unusually cleanly. Consumables and blockages — filters, salt, the drain pump, foam — come with detailed instructions and photographs. Everything to do with electronics and pumps gets one sentence: this is a technical fault that you cannot remedy yourself. There is no middle ground, which is frustrating but at least honest.

Where the code shows on a Miele

Miele publish 45 dishwasher codes, and for 21 of them they state no cause at all — the entire article is the instruction to book a repair. So if you have looked up your code on Miele’s own site and found nothing but a booking link, that is not a gap in their website, it is their policy. The useful consequence is that a Miele code with no published meaning tells you something in itself: it is in the half Miele consider theirs rather than yours. Codes in the F170s are the gentlest of the set, covering rinse aid, salt and filters rather than faults.

How to reset a Miele

For the blockage and consumable codes, clearing the cause and restarting the programme is the whole procedure and Miele describe it step by step. For everything else Miele offer no reset, which is deliberate — where they have decided a fault needs service, they do not give owners a way to dismiss it.

F11	Water left standing in the cabinet because the machine cannot drain. Miele treat this as an owner job and walk you through the drain pump.	Get it checked
F12	The water inlet is blocked or restricted. Miele use the same wording for F13, F15 and F173, and warn that the hose connection houses an electrical valve.	Get it checked
F70	The Waterproof System has activated. Miele give the clearest emergency instruction of any dishwasher manufacturer — close the stopcock, switch off, unplug, call.	Stop — call an engineer
