Bristan CL status codewhat it means
Not a fault. A scheduled cleaning reminder that runs for five shower cycles and then stops on its own, whether or not you do anything.
Before you start
What CL means
CL is a maintenance prompt rather than an error, and Bristan are explicit about it: a reminder to routinely service-clean the shower to maintain showering performance, which will show for five shower cycles. Everything worth knowing follows from those two facts. It is time-based rather than condition-based — the shower has not detected scale, measured a drop in flow or found anything wrong. It has counted, and it is asking. And it goes away by itself after five showers whether or not you clean anything, which means an owner who ignores it will see it disappear and reasonably conclude the problem fixed itself. There was no problem to fix, but there is a real reason to do what it asks.
What Bristan want cleaned is specific: the showerhead, the inlet filter and the outlet hose mesh filter. All three are restrictions in the water path, and restriction is the underlying cause of a remarkable share of everything else that goes wrong with an electric shower. It is what makes the water too hot, what makes the temperature cycle, what trips the thermal cut-out, and what bursts a pressure relief device.
So the reminder is not housekeeping; it is the manufacturer trying to prevent the faults that fill the rest of their own troubleshooting table. In a hard water area it is worth treating as a genuine schedule rather than a suggestion, because the interval between the shower being fine and the shower being restricted enough to misbehave is measured in months.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled cleaning interval reached | The only cause. Bristan describe it as a reminder to routinely service-clean the shower, shown for five shower cycles. | Common |
| Nothing has actually been detected | Worth stating plainly. The shower has not measured a restriction or a fault — it has counted showers and asked. | Common |
What to try yourself
Take the showerhead off and clean the spray plate. Rubbing the flexible jets clears light scale; a head that has gone hard is cheaper to replace than to rescue.
Remove the outlet hose from the shower, take out the mesh filter and clean it. Bristan name this one specifically and it is the one nobody knows about.
Isolate the shower at the pull cord and close the servicing valve, then clean the inlet filter behind the inlet connection.
Pull the cord before touching the plumbing, and close the servicing valve on the shower feed rather than the main stopcock.Put everything back, restore the water and run the shower. The display returns to normal after five cycles regardless, so do not judge the clean by the code disappearing.
Get a qualified electrician to look at your Bristan CL
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified electrician, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

- E3Get it checkedA Joy Care code about water arriving. Two of Bristan’s four causes are things you can check yourself in a few minutes and cost nothing.Related: same brand

Common questions about Bristan CL
Do I have to do anything about CL?
The display will clear after five shower cycles whether you do or not. Whether you should is a different question — Bristan are asking you to clean the three restrictions that cause most of the other faults in their own troubleshooting table.
Does CL mean my shower is scaled up?
No. It is a counter, not a measurement. The shower has reached its cleaning interval and asked; it has not detected scale, low flow or anything else.
What is the outlet hose mesh filter?
A small mesh in the connection where the hose screws onto the shower. Bristan list it alongside the showerhead and the inlet filter, and it is the one most people have never removed.
