Bristan electric shower fault codes
Bristan are the only electric shower brand here that displays actual codes. There are five of them, two are not faults, and one means different things on different Bristan showers.
Where the code shows on a Bristan
Bristan show codes on a small temperature indicator display on the front of the shower, and there are five things it can put there beyond a temperature: LP, E1, E2, E3, CL and a pair of dashes. Which of them your shower can show depends on the model — the Glee documents LP, E1, CL and the dashes, while the Joy Care documents LP, E1, E2 and E3 — so a code missing from your manual is usually a code your shower does not produce rather than an omission. The important warning is that the meanings are not stable across the range. E1 on a Glee is a thermistor fault that Bristan answer by telling you to phone them; E1 on a Joy Care is first of all hot water left in the unit after an abrupt stop, then a blockage they tell you to clean out yourself. Check which shower you have before acting on either.
How to reset a Bristan
Bristan publish no reset sequence, no button combination and no service menu for their electric showers. What they publish instead is condition-specific, and the two worth knowing are both timing rather than procedure. For an LP display caused by an activated thermal cut-out, the Joy Care guide says to turn the unit off and wait five minutes for it to cool before using again — five minutes specifically, so it is worth timing rather than guessing. For an LP caused by low pressure, the instruction is to turn the unit off and wait until water pressure increases before using again, which is waiting on the supply rather than on the appliance. The five minutes is the Joy Care’s instruction only. On the Glee, Cheer, Smile, Solis and Noctis the guides describe a Temperature Control Device that cycles by itself: it switches the elements off when the water inside gets too hot, they come back on once the unit has cooled, and the cycle repeats until the temperature is turned down, so the remedy on those is the temperature control anticlockwise rather than a wait. Beyond those, Bristan’s standing instruction for anything abnormal is to turn off at the mains electrical supply and consult them, and there is nothing an owner is meant to hold down or power-cycle.
Most common Bristan faults
The Bristan codes people look up most.
- LPGet it checkedTwo letters that look like an abbreviation for low pressure. On a Joy Care, Bristan file six different causes under them, including a tripped cut-out.
- E1Get it checkedThe code where Bristan contradict themselves. On a Glee it is a failed thermistor and a phone call; on a Joy Care, hot water left in the unit or a blockage you clear yourself.
- E3Get it checkedA Joy Care code about water arriving. Two of Bristan’s four causes are things you can check yourself in a few minutes and cost nothing.
- E2Get it checkedA Joy Care code covering two component faults: an inlet or outlet thermistor, or the temperature control dial. Neither is an owner repair.
