Fridge or freezer Ice building upwhat to check

Stop — call an engineerFridge or freezerLast updated

Real fault, and one where the obvious remedy is the dangerous one. Never chip ice out with anything metal — the pipework carrying flammable refrigerant runs through the walls you would be hitting.

Get a qualified refrigeration engineer to look at your fridge or freezer

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified refrigeration engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What this means

Ice in a frost-free appliance is a genuine fault rather than a nuisance, and it has a recognisable shape. The freezer keeps working while the fridge above it gets warm, or a sheet of ice forms on the back wall of the freezer, or the fan starts rattling as it catches on frost. What is behind it is the defrost cycle. Every frost-free appliance runs a heater periodically to clear the evaporator, and when that stops working, frost accumulates until it blocks the airflow that carries cold from the evaporator to the compartments. That is why the fridge warms first: it is furthest from the source. This is the commonest genuine failure in the category, and it needs an engineer.

The reason this page is rated stop rather than caution is not the fault, it is the remedy people reach for. Fridge manuals across the industry carry the same standard safety instruction, and Samsung's is representative: do not use mechanical devices or any other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer. That sentence is not about protecting the plastic. Samsung state in the same manual that the appliance contains a small amount of isobutane refrigerant, R600a, a natural gas with high environmental compatibility that is, however, also combustible, and that care must be taken to ensure that no parts of the refrigerating circuit are damaged. The evaporator pipework runs through the back wall of the freezer compartment and through the cabinet walls — which is exactly where an ice pick, a knife or a screwdriver goes when somebody decides to hurry things along.

Samsung publish the consequence of getting it wrong: refrigerant squirting out of the pipes could ignite or cause an eye injury, and failing to ventilate may result in fire or explosion. A punctured evaporator is also the end of the appliance, because a domestic fridge with a holed sealed system is not economically repairable. The safe way to defrost is time. Switch it off, empty it, open the doors and wait. LG publish figures for the ice-locked case on their own appliances: unplug it and leave both doors open for at least eight hours, or a full day in summer and three days in winter where ice has locked the fan motor. Beko publish a trigger for freezers that are not frost-free: defrost twice a year or when the frost layer reaches about 7 mm.

What causes it

Causes of Ice building up, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The defrost cycle has stopped workingThe usual fault. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or sensor lets frost build on the evaporator until it blocks airflow. The classic symptom is a warm fridge over a working freezer.Common
A door seal letting warm damp air inEvery bit of humid air that gets in has to have its moisture frozen out somewhere. A failing gasket or a door that does not sit square produces ice steadily.Common
A blocked defrost drainMeltwater from each defrost cycle has to get away. If the drain is blocked, it refreezes where it sits and builds into a sheet of ice in the bottom of the compartment.Common
A door left open, or opened very oftenA one-off event rather than a fault, but it puts a lot of moisture in at once and the ice it produces looks identical.Occasional

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£120–£280

Time on site

8 hours

A defrost heater, thermostat or sensor with labour. Worth weighing against the age of the appliance, because on an older fridge freezer the repair can approach the cost of replacing it.

Common questions

Why can I not just chip the ice off?

Because the refrigerant pipework runs through the walls you would be hitting, and on any modern fridge that pipework carries R600a isobutane, which Samsung describe in their own manual as combustible. A punctured evaporator releases flammable gas into a confined space next to a compressor, and it also ends the appliance, because a holed sealed system is not economically repairable on a domestic fridge.

Can I defrost it myself at all?

Yes, and time is the safe method. Switch it off, take everything out, leave the doors open and let it melt. LG publish at least eight hours for frost around a fan motor, and up to a day in summer or three days in winter where ice has locked it. What is not safe is anything that speeds the process up mechanically or with heat.

Is defrosting a fix?

It is a reset rather than a repair. If the defrost cycle has failed, the ice will come back over the following weeks, and the fact that it returns is itself the diagnosis. Manual defrosting buys you time and makes the appliance usable while you arrange a repair.

How do I know if it is the drain rather than the defrost heater?

Where the ice is tells you a lot. A sheet in the bottom of the compartment, or water pooling under the salad drawers, points at the drain. A layer of frost on the back wall of the freezer with a warm fridge above points at the defrost cycle. An engineer will confirm it, but the distinction is worth mentioning when you book.

Not reviewed by an engineer

No engineer has read this page. Severity follows what the manufacturer publishes, and we would rather tell you that than let a byline imply a sign-off.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation
  • Trade body guidance

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
