Neff Small squareswhat it means
Small squares on the display mean demo mode was switched on by accident. Neff describe what that does in five words: in demo mode the oven runs cold.
Before you start
What this means
Demo mode exists so a shop can have a live oven on the floor that lights up and responds without ever getting hot. Neff’s own sentence for what it does is the clearest anyone in this category manages: in demo mode the oven runs cold. Small squares on the display are how a Neff announces it, and their published cause is that a button combination for demo mode was inadvertently activated. This is the only place in the BSH oven documentation where the button sequence to get out is actually written down rather than deferred to the manual.
Switch the appliance off, touch the Info button for three seconds, scroll until the lock has been selected, then touch the clock button for three seconds. One thing to be sceptical about: BSH give four different figures across their documents for how long the power must be off, or how long the settings window stays open, and they range from ten seconds to five minutes. We have quoted the sequence rather than any of the durations, because the durations do not agree with each other.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| A button combination was pressed inadvertently | Neff’s own stated cause. Demo mode lives behind a deliberate sequence, but that sequence is reachable by anyone pressing and holding controls at random. | Common |
| The appliance came out of a showroom with it set | The reason the feature exists. An ex-display oven, or one demonstrated at the point of sale, can arrive with the setting already active. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Switch the appliance off.
Touch the Info button for three seconds, then scroll until the lock has been selected.
Touch the clock button for three seconds. That completes Neff’s published sequence.
If your model instead shows the word Demo or a letter o in the temperature display, use the manual for your model — BSH document several different exit routes and they do not agree on timings.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Neff oven
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
