SMA 3701 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Residual current. Unlike the insulation event this one trips a running system, and SMA publish the threshold: a sudden jump of 30 milliamps or more.

Get a registered electrician to look at your SMA 3701

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a registered electrician, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What 3701 means

Event 3701 is SMA's residual current or excessive leakage current event, internally named EvtdAmpMax, and the useful thing about it is how precisely SMA distinguish it from the insulation event that sits nearby in their numbering. Their published explanation is that a residual-current monitoring unit in their transformerless inverters detects potential ground faults by monitoring alternating and direct residual currents, and that sudden jumps of thirty milliamps or more will disconnect the inverter from the grid. So the two events answer two different questions at two different moments. Event 3501 measures the insulation before the inverter connects and stops it starting. Event 3701 watches while it runs and trips it mid-generation. Knowing which you have tells you something useful about the symptom you are seeing: a system that never starts in the morning versus a system that drops out during the day are different findings from the same underlying family.

The thirty milliamp figure is worth pausing on, because SMA say why it matters in their article on the event itself: residual currents greater than 30 mA can be life-threatening, the inverter disconnects from the utility grid immediately after the limit value has been overshot, and as soon as the values are back in the permissible range again, the inverter automatically switches itself on again. That last sentence is the one to hold on to, because it means a system that tripped and came back has not been repaired — it has been allowed to reconnect. Thirty milliamps is also the same order as the residual current protection used to protect people from electric shock in a domestic installation, and it is a small fraction of what the array is capable of delivering. The monitoring exists because current finding an unintended path to earth is the signature of insulation breaking down somewhere, and the same conditions that produce it can produce a shock hazard on the structure.

SMA's corrective measure for both events is identical and short: contact your installer for further investigation. They also link the events to the light on the unit, which is the only indication most owners will see, since modern SMA inverters have no display. If the red LED is glowing and the event number 3501, 3601 or 3701 is being displayed in the Results menu on the inverter user interface, there may be a ground fault present, and the electrical insulation from the PV system to ground is defective or insufficient. Their strong recommendation covers the whole family, 3501, 3502, 3503, 3601 and 3701 together: have the PV system inspected by a qualified person.

What causes it

Causes of the SMA 3701 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Insulation breaking down under operating conditionsThe common thread with the insulation events. Current finds a path to earth once the system is running and at voltage, which is when the monitoring sees it.Common
Moisture creating a leakage pathThe same weather dependence SMA publish for the insulation family. Rain and dew reveal defects in connectors and cabling that are dry and quiet the rest of the time.Common
A damaged connector or cable in the DC wiringPhysical damage anywhere in the array wiring can produce leakage that only appears at full operating voltage rather than on a static measurement.Common
A degraded moduleA failing junction box or a compromised backsheet allows leakage from the cells to the frame, which the monitoring unit picks up as residual current.Occasional

Common questions about SMA 3701

How is this different from 3501?

Timing and method. SMA publish 3501 as a check on insulation resistance in the DC input circuit before grid connection, which stops the inverter starting. 3701 is a residual current monitoring unit watching while the system runs, and a sudden jump of 30 milliamps or more disconnects it from the grid. One prevents a start, the other interrupts a running system.

Why is 30 milliamps enough to shut everything down?

Because it is the same order of magnitude as the protection used to guard people against electric shock in a domestic installation. It is a tiny fraction of what the array can deliver, and it is being treated as significant precisely because current going somewhere it should not is the signature of insulation failing.

It reset itself and has been fine since.

That is the published behaviour rather than a repair. SMA state that as soon as the values are back in the permissible range the inverter automatically switches itself on again, and that these events are influenced by ambient conditions such as rain or dew and can occur sporadically. Their recommendation covers exactly that case: have the PV system inspected by a qualified person, because sporadic faults are not always easy to detect and a thorough inspection remains essential.

Mine says 3601, not 3701. Is that the same thing?

Close but not identical, and SMA publish the difference. In the Sunny Boy 3.0 to 6.0 manual, 3601 is high discharge current: the leakage current of the inverter and the PV module is too high, and there is a ground fault, a residual current or a malfunction. Their article on event 36 or 3601 adds a third possibility the 3701 article does not have — that every PV array has a parasitic capacitance to its surroundings which rises on a moist surface, and under certain design and weather conditions the leakage current limit is reached and the inverter interrupts feed-in as a precautionary measure, reconnecting automatically at normal values. The instruction is the same for both events: do not touch the cables, the substructure, the frame or the modules, and contact your installer for further investigation.

Where do I find the event number?

In the Results menu of the inverter’s own web interface, or in the system logbook or event monitor in Sunny Portal. Modern SMA inverters have no display, so the light on the unit is only an indication — SMA link a glowing red LED with events 3501, 3601 or 3701 in the Results menu as pointing at a ground fault. The earlier Sunny Boy TL-21 has a display and shows the number with the text Resid.curr.too.high.
