LG LE1 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerLG machines using the alphanumeric code set. The premium heat pump range shows the phrase "Drum motor error" instead, with the same cause and the same load checkLast updated

The motor stopped suddenly. LG give one owner check before their usual instruction, and it is worth doing because it is free.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the LG properly.

What LE1 means

LG label this MOTOR LOCKED ERROR, give the cause as "The motor has stopped suddenly", and then do something they hardly ever do — offer a check before sending you to service. Their full instruction is "Check if the amount of clothes exceeds the maximum load capacity. Unplug the power plug and call for service."

Two sentences, and the first one is free. That first sentence is worth taking seriously because it is the only owner action LG attach to any of their motor or compressor faults, which suggests they see overloading cause this often enough to be worth printing. A drum packed past capacity is heavy, and a heavy drum is hard to start turning and hard to keep turning. The motor either stalls or draws enough current that the protection intervenes, and from the control board’s point of view the motor has stopped suddenly. Take some washing out and it may simply run.

Beyond that, LG’s instruction stands. A motor that stalls with a modest load has something else going on — an obstruction jammed between the drum and the casing, a belt that has failed, a bearing that has seized — and LG do not offer owner access to any of it. Do not keep restarting a stalled motor to see whether it catches, since repeatedly stalling a motor is a good way to turn a cheap fault into an expensive one.

What causes it

Causes of the LG LE1 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The drum is overloadedLG’s own check and the only owner action they publish on this code. A drum loaded past capacity is heavy enough to stall the motor, particularly at the start of a cycle.Common
Something is jammed between the drum and the casingA sock, a wire from a bra, a stray coin. The drum cannot turn, the motor tries, and the protection stops it. Often audible as a scraping noise in the days beforehand.Common
The drive belt has failedA snapped or slipping belt means the motor turns freely while the drum does not. On some machines that presents as a motor fault, and it makes a distinctive sound — the machine running normally with a still drum.Occasional
A seized bearing or a failed motorThe mechanical end of the range, and the expensive one. A bearing on its way out usually announces itself with noise for weeks before it stops anything.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Take the washing out and spread it, then look at how much there was. LG’s published check is whether the load exceeded the maximum capacity.

  2. With the machine switched off, turn the drum by hand. It should move freely with a little resistance. Stiff, or catching at one point, means something is jammed.

  3. Feel around the inside of the drum and along the baffles for a garment, an underwire or a coin.

  4. Try a short cycle with a much smaller load. If it runs, the load size was the problem and nothing is broken.

  5. If the motor hums but the drum does not turn, or the machine sounds normal with a still drum, stop. That points at the belt or the motor and LG’s instruction applies: unplug and call.

Do not keep restarting a stalled motor. Repeated stalling can damage the motor or its electronics and turn an inexpensive repair into an expensive one.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your LG LE1

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£280

Time on site

15 minutes

Free if the load was simply too big. A belt is at the cheaper end of dryer repairs and a motor or bearing at the expensive one, where on an older machine it may exceed what the dryer is worth.

Common questions about LG LE1

How much is too much washing?

LG do not give a rule of thumb, only a reference to the maximum load capacity in your manual. A practical test other manufacturers use is whether you can fit a hand’s width above the levelled load — if you cannot, take something out. Bulk matters more than weight when drying.

The machine sounds like it is running but the drum is still.

That is characteristic of a belt rather than a motor. It is not dangerous and it is one of the cheaper dryer repairs, but it does mean taking a panel off, which is not an owner job on these machines.

Why does LG give a check here when they give none anywhere else?

We can only infer, but the natural reading is that they see overloading cause this often. It is the only owner action attached to any of their motor or compressor codes, and it costs nothing to try.
